Kokosinski Takes Home Silver at Temple Open

The Basics
• Location: Philadelphia, PA • Liacouras Center
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team opened the season by placing three Blue Jays in the top-five at the 40th annual Temple Open. Sophomore Eryk Kokosinski led the way with his second-place finish in the Sabre.
 
How it Happened
• Kokosinski went 14-3 on the day, including 5-1 in direct elimination play. He lost to Penn State's Ethan Mullennix in the finals. Freshman Sachin Mehta had an impressive debut, finishing in fifth place with a 14-1 record. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Kokosinski. Sophomore Paul Lam made it three Blue Jay Sabrists in the top-15 with his 14th place finish. He finished with a 9-5 record, including a 2-1 record in direct elimination. Junior Vance Wood placed 31st with a 6-7 record and sophomore Devon Osgood placed 35th with a 7-5 record.
• Freshman Jack Werrell led the Blue Jays with a fifth place finish in the Epee. He went 10-1 on the day, with his only loss coming in the quarterfinals of direct elimination. Freshman Jeffrey Wang finished in 19th place after going 7-4 on the day. Freshman Liam McKinley tied for 26th with a 6-5 record, while classmate Danny Comer placed 28th (6-4). Sophomore Kyle Kennedy finished in 36th place with a 4-5 mark and freshman Kent Kotaka took 49th place after going 3-7.
• In the Foil, it was sophomore Evan Lau leading the way by finishing in a tie for 22nd with a 7-3 record. Sophomore Noah Park finished with an 8-2 mark to place 24th on the day. Senior Jun Choi placed 33rd with a 5-4 record.
 
What it Means
• Kokosinski's runner-up finish is the best by the Blue Jays in the Sabre since 2005. It is also the best finish in any weapon since David Ferguson placed second in the Foil in 2008.
• Werrell's fifth-place finish is the highest in the Epee since 2009 when Nick Krywopusk finished in a tie for third.
• Wood's last win of the day was the 100th of his career.
