KANSAS CITY, MO –
Emily Maheras and
Mizuho Obayashi were named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America team it was announced on Wednesday afternoon. Maheras was named a first team All-American while Obayashi was named to the third team. The Blue Jays have now had 16 Scholar All-America selections in program history.
To be eligible for selection, the student-athlete must be nominated by his head coach and meet the following criteria: Have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his or her career; Start more than 50 percent of all games and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (i.e., all-conference) or contributions to the success of his team; Plays for a current United Soccer Coaches College Services member institution; Be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution; Be in his second year at the current institution if a transfer student.
Those meeting the above criteria will be considered by the committee for one of the Scholar All-America teams. The committee reviews both the academic and athletic accomplishments of the nominees.
A junior defender out of Ogden, Utah, Obayashi adds another honor to her already outstanding 2019. This year Obayashi has been named a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American, a first team all-region selection and a first team All-Centennial selection. Obayashi played in every contest, starting 23 of them, playing nearly 1,800 minutes for the Johns Hopkins back line.
A United Soccer Coaches Scholar Third Team All-American last year, Maheras adds the first team selection to an already hefty list of career accolades. She was named First Team All-Region for the second year in a row this season. She is also a two-time All-Centennial first team selection and the 2019 Centennial Conference Player of the Year. Finally, Maheras was named a Second Team All-American this year.
