Schlegel Promoted to Head Water Polo Coach

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics Alanna W. Shanahan announced the promotion of Max Schlegel to the university's head water polo coach position today. Schlegel has been an assistant coach with the Blue Jays for the last three seasons and will begin his duties on February 11.

Schlegel, a four-year standout for the Loyola Marymount Lions, joined the Hopkins staff after a two-year stint as the head coach at nearby Calvert Hall.

"Growing up in Maryland, I have watched Johns Hopkins water polo since I was 12 years old," said Schlegel. "It is a true honor earning the privilege to be the new head coach. Ted was a foundation in the NCAA water polo community for more than 25 years and he set the culture of high standards our program has and that I wish to continue. I believe the future of Johns Hopkins water polo is very bright and we will continue to strive for excellence in and out of the pool."

A 2012 graduate of Loyola Marymount, Schlegel helped the Lions to four straight Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) championships and four straight trips to the NCAA Final Four. LMU earned a pair of third-place finishes at the NCAAs in 2008 and 2010. He totaled 50 goals, 23 assists and 56 steals in his career and captained the Lions as a senior.

Schlegel led Calvert Hall to an MIAA Championship in 2013 as an assistant coach and again in 2015 as the head coach. He also guided the Cardinals to a Prep Eastern Championship, a Flight 3 title and a Flight 2 runner-up finish at the Beast of the East Championship. A native of Annapolis, MD, Schlegel played two years on the National Development team, two years on the National Cadet team and one year on the National Youth b team. He also won a gold medal in the Youth Pan America Games in Mexico.
