How it Happened
The Blue Jay bats came to life on Sunday afternoon, racking up 19 hits and scoring 13 runs to avoid becoming the first team to start 0-3 in the Bob Babb era. Austin Sacks, Mike Eberle and AJ King combined for 10 hits, six runs scored and 11 RBIs in the victory. Freshman hurler Peter Schaefer earned the win in his first career start, striking out three and allowing two runs over five innings.
Babb's team wasted no time getting to Arcadia starter Mitch Blake. Eberle drew a walk, advancing to third on a Chris Festa single. Hitting in the cleanup spot after a big opening day, Sacks ripped a double down the right field line, scoring Eberle. Blake held steady, striking out James Ingram and Dillon Bowman to hold the lead to 1-0 after an inning.
The Blue Jays got right back after it in the second, as Jared deFaria started things off with a one-out walk. Adam Kohl picked up a base knock, bringing up the top of the order. Matthew Ritchie roped a ball into right field, one-hopping off the wall and scoring deFaria. With runners on second and third, Eberle sent a ball back up the middle, scoring a pair. Eberle moved into scoring position on a balk and came around to score on an RBI single from Sacks to give the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead.
Leading 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Eberle singled and stole second, putting a runner in scoring position for Sacks. The junior outfielder ripped a line drive over the wall in left and the Blue Jay lead was 7-1. JHU tacked on another later in the inning when King brought home Ingram with an RBI single.
The offensive outburst continued in the sixth inning, when already leading 9-2, the Blue Jays added four more. King picked up two more RBIs, driving in Bowman and Sacks with another liner to right center. King came around to score as Ritchie picked up his second hit and RBI of the day. Finally, Eberle's fourth hit of the day brought home Kohl, giving Eberle his fourth RBI of the contest.
