BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics and Recreation
Jennifer S. Baker announced the appointment of
Bill Smedick as the University's Faculty Athletics Representative today. Â Smedick takes over for
Tristan Davies, who had served in the role since July 2009; he will be just the third person to serve in the role at Johns Hopkins since 1990.

"We are thrilled to welcome Bill Smedick as our Faculty Athletics Representative," Baker noted. "He is a highly-respected member of our faculty and has a demonstrated passion for working with our student-athletes. I look forward to working closely with him on a number of initiatives that will enhance the student-athlete experience at Johns Hopkins."

As the University's Faculty Athletics Representative, Smedick will play a key role in a number of areas, including ensuring a quality student-athlete experience while promoting student-athlete well-being. In addition, he'll assist in the oversight of intercollegiate athletics and assure the program is conducted in a manner designed to protect and enhance the physical, psychological, and educational well-being of student-athletes. He'll also oversee the nomination of student-athletes for NCAA grant, scholarship and recognition programs.

At Johns Hopkins, Smedick is a Senior Lecturer and serves as the Director of the Leadership Studies Program in the Center for Leadership Education in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins. He currently teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has been involved in leadership education at the University since 1989.

The long-time Faculty Advisor for the Blue Jay women's lacrosse program, Smedick also serves as a consultant for Kathleen Allen Associates, providing student affairs program reviews, curriculum design and professional coaching.

In addition to his responsibilities at Johns Hopkins, Smedick has served in a number of community and professional association leadership roles, including as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the National Association for Campus Activities, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Counsel for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) and as President of the Westminster (MD) Wolves Soccer Club.

Smedick graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in education and went on to earn his master's in higher education from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and his Ed.D. at nearby Morgan State University.
