Four Score as Johns Hopkins Shuts Out Muhlenberg

The Basics

• The Short Story: Four Blue Jays scored to lead the second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 4-0 win at Muhlenberg Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
• Junior Olivia Fox got the Blue Jays on the board early as she blasted a shot home off a penalty corner just 3:36 into the game.
• Junior Tessa Erickson doubled Hopkins' lead when she redirected a pass from freshman Jenna Halpin midway through the third quarter.
• The Blue Jays struck for two quick goals in the fourth quarter, scoring less than two minutes apart to turn a two-goal game into a four-goal game. Senior Abby Birk gave Hopkins a 3-0 lead at the 50:25-mark when she one-timed a low shot off a Maddie Brown-Scherer pass. Junior Anna Scott capped the scoring when she bounced on a rebound in the middle of the circle and slotted a shot inside the far post to put JHU up 4-0.  
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 22-8 all-time against Muhlenberg and has won four straight in the series.
• The Blue Jays clinch a berth in the Centennial Conference Tournament with the win. JHU remains alone atop the conference standings at 7-0 with three games to play.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Brown-Scherer extends her point-scoring streak to six games, though her goal-scoring streak was snapped at five. With two assists on the day, she moves into sixth place in school history with 22 career helpers.
• Birk moves into a tie for 15th in JHU history with her 24th career goal. Fox's goal was her second this season and second game-winner.
• Sophomore Alexis Loder finished one save to earn the shutout for the Blue Jays. Mel Cartagena made 15 saves in the cage for the Mules while Taylor Canfield added a defensive save.
• Hopkins outshot Muhlenberg, 31-1, and had a 24-3 advantage in corners.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins returns to Homewood Field to take on Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, October 20. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
