The Short Story: In a meeting of two top-10 teams and the only two undefeated teams left in the conference, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team prevailed in a 4-0 win over #10 Ursinus Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins nearly grabbed an early 1-0 lead off back-to-back shots from junior
Tessa Erickson less than two minutes in but a save by Bears goalie Jordan Ulsh and a defensive save from Erin McIlhenny kept the Blue Jays off the board.
• JHU broke through with 2:14 to play in the first period off the stick of senior
Abby Birk. She fed a long pass to freshman
Liz Falterer, who dribbled into the circle and then played a behind-the-back pass to Birk in the middle of the circle. Birk one-time the pass into the back of the Ursinus cage to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.
• In the blink of an eye midway through the second quarter, the Blue Jays turned that one-goal lead into a three-goal advantage. Junior
Sadie Abboud split the Bears' defense with a pass to senior
Maddie Brown-Scherer. She collected the pass, took a touch around the goalie and then scored from the doorstep at 5:16. The duo connected again just 56 seconds later. Birk sent a pass wide to Abboud, who dribbled 10 yards and then hit a hard pass into the center of the circle. Brown-Scherer one-timed the pass inside the left post to stake Hopkins to a 3-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays closed out the scoring with just over 10 minutes to play. Sophomore
Gen Mehra corralled a loose ball, dribbled along the circle and blasted a shot from the top that deflected off a defender's stick and over the goalie.
