The Short Story: The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored three quick goals in the third and held off a late rally to defeat fifth-ranked Bowdoin, 3-2, on Sunday in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Â
How it Happened
• It was a tale of two halves as the teams battled through a scoreless first half and then combined for five goals in the final 32 minutes. Freshman
Emily Amsden was again called upon to take a penalty stroke after the Blue Jays drew one with 13:05 to play in the third. She beat Maddie Ferrucci just inside the post to put Hopkins on top, 1-0.
• Almost exactly three minutes later, the Blue Jays doubled their lead after earning a penalty corner. Senior
Bryn Rolon inserted the corner to classmate
Maddie Brown-Scherer, who played a behind-the-back pass to classmate
Abby Birk. She one-timed a low, hard shot to the near post to stake Hopkins to a two-goal lead.
• In less the three minutes, the Blue Jays added what turned out to be a much needed goal as they took a 3-0 lead with 7:08 to play in the third. Junior
Tessa Erickson sent a pass across the circle and a wide-open Birk ran onto it and blasted a shot into the back of the cage.
• The Polar Bears won't going away however and scored twice in a 26-second pass midway through the fourth to make it a one-goal game. Manveer Sandhu ended the Blue Jays bid at a shutout when she collected a centering pass from Faith Jennings, took a couple of touches and then slotted a low shot past sophomore
Alexis Loder at 51:30. Jennings then lofted a back-handed shot into the top of the Hopkins' cage from 10 yards out and just like that it was a 3-2 game.
