BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse sophomore midfielder
Brendan Grimes was named to the final 23-player roster that will represent the United States in the 2022 U21 World Lacrosse Championships in Limerick, Ireland (August 10-20, 2022) it was announced today. The championship, originally a U19 event scheduled for 2020, has been postponed twice due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. World Lacrosse has since increased the age grouping to U20 permanently with a one-year exception to U21 for the 2022 championship due to the postponements.
Â
Grimes, a graduate of nearby Boys' Latin, is one of seven midfielders selected to the team by United States head coach
Nick Myers and his staff. He played in all 13 games as a freshman for the Blue Jays during the 2021 season and tallied eight goals; after starting the first five games on attack he slid to the Blue Jay midfield for the final eight games. He was the only freshman on the team to start a game in 2021 and was selected as the Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week after netting the first hat trick of his career in a game at Ohio State on April 10.
Â
Grimes is the latest in a long line of Johns Hopkins players who have represented the United States on the U19 (U21 this year) team. Since the origination of the event in 1988, Grimes is the 20
th active or future Blue Jay to earn a spot on the team. Johns Hopkins has had at least one representative on the team in every championship (1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2012, 2016) and three other future Blue Jays represented Canada in 2003, 2008 and 2012.
Â
Among the 23 players selected, Grimes is one of just six who graduated from high school in 2020; sixteen of the 23 graduated from high school in 2019 and one in 2018.
Â
The team will next gather for a training weekend at USA Lacrosse headquarters in June.
