BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins water polo team placed four players on the 2021 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America teams it was announced today. Senior
Jayden Kunwar led the way with first team honors. Senior
Emerson Sullivan was named to the second team and senior
Jake Pearson and freshman
Kyle Pearson were named honorable mention.
The four All-America selections tie the school record and bring the program's all-time total to 71. JHU has produced six ACWPC All-Americans under head coach
Max Schlegel, who recently completed his second season. The Pearsons are the first pair of brothers in program history to earn All-America honors.
Kunwar earns his second career All-America honor after picking up second team honors as a sophomore in 2019. He led the Blue Jays in points (88) and drawn ejections (41), ranked second in goals (60) and assists (28) and was tied for fourth in steals (24). Kunwar totaled 11 hat tricks and had at least one in point in 25 of his 26 games in 2021. He also scored 14 five-meter goals and has 45 in his career. Kunwar ranks in the top-20 in school history in points (253 • 16
th), goals (193 • 12
th), assists (60 • T-18
th) and drawn ejections (107 • 10
th).
Sullivan grabs his first career All-America honor, despite missing 12 games due to injury. He led the team in goals (61) and ranked second in points (71), drawn ejections (33) and blocks (13). He also ranked third in steals (26). Sullivan notched at least one point in 17 of his 18 games and tallied 11 hat tricks. He is tied for 20
th in school history in points (184), 19
th in goals (149), tied for 12
th in drawn ejections (84) and eighth in blocks (29).
Jake Pearson earns All-America honors for the first time in his career. He capped his career by leading the Blue Jays in with 62 steals and 17 blocks. He also added 21 goals, 21 assists and 21 drawn ejections. His 17 blocks are tied for the third most in school history, while his 62 steals are tied for seventh most.
Jake Pearson ranks sixth in JHU history in career blocks (35), tied for 15
th in steals (118), tied for 23
rd in drawn ejections (54) and tied for 25
th in assists (44).
Kyle Pearson had an impressive freshman campaign in the goal to earn All-America honors. He is the first freshman to earn All-America accolades since 2015 (
Giorgio Cico) and just the third freshman goalie to do so. He finished with 279 saves, a 12.85 goals against average, a .483 save percentage, nine assists and 33 steals.
Kyle Pearson ranked second on the team in steals and posted 15 double-digit save performances. He holds the school records for saves by a freshman in a game (20) and season. In addition, his 279 saves are the fifth most in a season in school history and he already ranks seventh in career saves.
