An Opening Review
• The loss to Ohio State was just the fourth for Johns Hopkins in a season opener in the last 21 years.
• Despite the loss, Johns Hopkins has won 12 of its last 14 season openers.
Head Coach Peter Milliman Briefly
• Last week's game against Ohio State was the first for Peter Milliman as the head coach at Johns Hopkins.
• Milliman spent three seasons as the head coach at Cornell from 2018-20 and compiled a record of 28-10 while guiding the Big Red.
• Cornell was ranked number two in the nation when the 2020 season came to an end in mid-March.
• While the sample size is still small, Peter Milliman has never lost two consecutive games as a head coach at the Division I level.
You Look FamiliarÂ
• Michigan head coach Kevin Conry is a 2004 Johns Hopkins graduate and was a four-year member of the Blue Jay lacrosse team.
• Conry helped the Blue Jays to a four-year record of 47-10, four trips to the NCAA Tournament and three appearances in the final four. Johns Hopkins advanced to the national championship game during his junior year in 2003 (lost to Virginia, 9-7, in title game).
• Conry was a teammate for one year with current Blue Jay defensive coordinator Jamison Koesterer, who was a freshman when Conry was a senior in 2004.
Narewski Off to Quick Start at the X
• Johns Hopkins returns one of the top faceoff tandems in the nation in senior Kyle Prouty and junior Matt Narewski, who have combined to take 631 of the team's 641 faceoffs since the start of the 2019 season (98.4%).
• Each has had the hot hand at different times and last week it was Narewski winning 14-of-22 (.636) with nine ground balls against Ohio State.
• After one game, Narewski leads the Big Ten and ranks ninth nationally in faceoff winning percentage.
• Prouty has won 229-of-421 (.544) career faceoffs (.549) with 104 ground balls. He finished 18th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage last season after winning 76-of-124 (.613). His .613 win percentage in 2020 was the highest by a JHU player since Mike Poppleton set a school record by winning 68.5% in 2013.
• Including last week's effort, Narewski is 143-of-274 (.522) in his career with 79 ground balls to his credit. He was 108-of-211 (.512) with 59 ground balls as a freshman in 2019.
DeSimone Leads Offense in First Game on Attack
• After playing in all 39 games with 37 starts at midfield in his first three seasons, senior Connor DeSimone made the move to attack this season. One game in and it looks like he's adjusted well.
• DeSimone tied his career high with three goals and added one assist for a personal-best four points to lead the Blue Jays offensively against Ohio State. Â
• The hat trick against the Buckeyes was the fourth of his career and boosted his career totals to 27 goals and 19 assists for 46 points.
Kirson Debuts in Goal
• Graduate student Josh Kirson made his Blue Jay debut in goal last week against Ohio State.
• Kirson, who transferred to Johns Hopkins after graduating from Ohio State last May, posted 13 saves in his first appearance for the Blue Jays.
• After JHU fell behind 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, Kirson posted 11 of his 13 saves over the final 45 minutes.
Blue Jay Notes of Interest
• Sophomore Jacob Angelus picked up an assist against Ohio State to run his point and assist streaks to five games dating back to last season. His five-game assist streak is the longest active streak on the team. He totaled three goals and five assists for eight points last season. All eight points came in the Blue Jays' final four games, including a four-point effort against Mount St. Mary's.
• After scoring one goal last week, senior Brett Baskin has at least one point in 10 of his last 12 games dating back to the 2019 season.
• Senior Conner Delaney was a First Team NABC All-American for the Blue Jay basketball team last season. He was a decorated lacrosse player in high school and had, at one point, committed to play Division I lacrosse before opting for basketball. He walked onto the JHU men's lacrosse team this year in late December and was the Blue Jays' top LSM in the season opener against Ohio State.
• Junior Garrett Degnon tied for the team-lead with 11 goals last season. He was the only Blue Jay to score at least one goal in every game and extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games with one tally against Ohio State.
• Senior Jack Keogh returned to the lineup last week against Ohio State after missing the entire 2020 season with an injury. He suffered the season-ending injury during a scrimmage in the fall of 2019 and had one goal against the Buckeyes in his return to the field.
• Junior Owen McManus has started all seven games on close defense since the start of the 2020 season after playing short stick middie as a freshman. He is majoring in economics and has a team-best 3.89 cumulative GPA.
• Sophomore Beaudan Szuluk transferred to JHU from Lafayette after starting all six games there on close defense as a freshman last year.
