Johns Hopkins-Michigan Men's Lacrosse Notes-II

Blue Jays Welcome Wolverines to Homewood Field on Sunday

The Game
•  For the second time this season, Johns Hopkins and Michigan will meet in a Big Ten game, this time in front of a live national television audience. Faceoff is set for 12 pm on Sunday, April 4 from Homewood Field (ESPNU).

Last Time Out
• The Blue Jays fell to 2-4 on the year with 11-8 loss on the road at Penn State last Sunday.
• Michigan slipped to 1-5 with a 14-6 loss at home against Ohio State last Saturday.

The Facts
•  This is the 134th season of Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse.  JHU first fielded a team in 1883.
•  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 995-350-15.
•  JHU owns 44 national championships with nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA crowns to its credit.

Poll Position
•  Johns Hopkins is listed as receiving votes in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week
• Michigan is not ranked in either the USILA Coaches Poll or the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week.

Series History
• This week's game will be the ninth all-time meeting between Johns Hopkins and Michigan.  The Blue Jays have won the previous eight meetings, including a 14-7 win in Ann Arbor earlier this season.
• The series dates to a 17-8 Blue Jay win in 2013 (Michigan's second season of varsity lacrosse).  The first three games in the series took place at Homewood Field, while four of the last five have taken place in Michigan.
• Johns Hopkins has scored at least 14 goals against the Wolverines in seven of the eight all-time meetings.
• The Blue Jays have won the previous four meetings at Homewood Field by an average of 8.75 goals per game and have averaged 16.5 goals per game in those four outings.

On This Date
•  This week's game against Michigan will be the 10th all-time for Johns Hopkins on April 4.
• The Blue Jays are 8-1 all-time in games played on April 4 with the only loss a 14-8 setback against North Carolina in 1992.
• The Blue Jays have never played a Big Ten game on April 4.  Their last game played on this date came in 2014 when they topped Albany, 13-8, at Homewood Field.

Extra-Extra
• Johns Hopkins cashed in on all four of its extra-man chances at Michigan, was 3-for-3 against Rutgers and hit on its only attempt last week at Penn State.  The Blue Jays are now 9-of-16 (.563) on the year.
• Through six games, Johns Hopkins ranks second in the Big Ten and tied for third nationally in extra-man percentage.
• JHU is one of just nine teams in the nation that is converting at better than 50%.
• The four extra-man goals against the Wolverines are the most for JHU since the Jays had six in the 2019 Big Ten Championship game against Penn State.
• The effort at Michigan marked the 18th time since 2003 that Johns Hopkins has scored four or more extra-man goals in a game.

Offensive Notes of Interest
• Johns Hopkins enters this week's game against Michigan averaging 10.33 goals per game on 29.0% shooting.
• In 24 quarters this season, the Blue Jays have scored two or more goals in 16 quarters, three or more in 11 quarters and four or more in six quarters.
• The Blue Jays' top four scorers (Connor DeSimone, Joey Epstein, Cole Williams, Garrett Degnon) have combined to score 47 goals on 119 shots (.395).

Sharing the Rock
• A key to head coach Peter Milliman's offense is sharing the ball.  During his three seasons as the head coach at Cornell, the Big Red collected assists on 357-of-550 (.649) goals scored.
• Without any practice in the fall and limited time in preseason, the Blue Jays' grasp of the offense continues to evolve and that is best exemplified in the number of assisted goals the team has scored.
• After collecting an assist on just 3-of-8 (.375) goals in the season opener against Ohio State, the Blue Jays collected 10 assists on 14 goals at Michigan (.714) and assisted on 7-of-10 (.700) at Maryland.
• Through six games, the Blue Jays have collected assists on 35-of-62 (.565) of their goals.

Strong in the Middle
•  Through six games, Johns Hopkins has outscored its six opponents by a combined margin of 38-30 in the second and third quarters and the Blue Jays have outshot the opposition by a total of 118-95 in those periods.
• Along the same lines, the Blue Jays have won 44-of-77 (.571) faceoffs in the second and third quarters combined.

Scoreless Droughts
•  The Johns Hopkins defense, which has been nearly entirely remade by first-year defensive coordinator Jamison Koesterer, continues to develop as the season unfolds and has held the opposition scoreless for extended stretches in five of the first six games this season.
• Through six games, Johns Hopkins has held the opposition scoreless for a stretch of 11:30 or longer seven times and 21 minutes or longer twice.
• In the win over Penn State, the Blue Jays held the Nittany Lions scoreless for 13:31 from the first to the second quarter and then blanked them for 29:02 between the second and fourth quarters.
• Through 24 quarters this season, Johns Hopkins has held the opposition to one goal or less in five quarters and two goals or less in nine quarters.
