The Short Story: The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got goals from four different players en route to a 4-3 win over visiting Christopher Newport Saturday at Homewood Field.
Â
How it Happened
• After a scoreless first half, Hopkins needed just 90 seconds in the second to get on the board. Junior
Tessa Erickson inserted a corner to senior
Abby Birk at the top of the circle, and she blasted a shot through traffic and into the back of the cage.
• Christopher Newport answered midway through the period to knot the score at one. Mauri Ware dribbled into the circle from the right wing and back-handed a shot through the defense and into the cage. The tie was short-lived however as the Blue Jays answered just 27 seconds later. Senior
Maddie Brown-Scherer collected a loose ball near the top of the circle and hit a reverse into the top of the cage to put Hopkins up 2-1.
• The Captains once again drew even when Chloe Thompson one-timed a deflection into the JHU cage midway through the third quarter.
• Hopkins responded with back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to push out to a 4-2 lead. Senior
Izzy Thompson chased down a long hit and slid a short pass to freshman
Grace Nockolds on the left post. Nockolds took a touch and then slotted a shot between the near post and the goalie's pad with 1:18 to play in the third. Just 93 seconds into the fourth quarter, Captains' goalie Gabi Gray stopped a hard shot from junior
Anna Scott, but junior
Sam Chabot back-handed the rebound in at the right post.
• CNU would get a late goal to slice Hopkins' lead to one with 1:27 left in the game. Ware collected the rebound off her own missed shot and slid it home to make it 4-3. That would be as close as the Captains would get.
