The Short Story: After waiting more than 640 days, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team treated its fans to a 4-1 win over visiting Shenandoah in both teams' season-opener Thursday night at Homewood Field.
Â
How it Happened
• Shenandoah struck first, scoring just over six minute into the game off a penalty corner. Kelsey Jones took the first shot off the insert, but it was blocked. The rebound kicked over to Amanda Hensen, who lobbed a pass into the middle of the circle, where Cassidy Morrison batted it out of the air and into the goal.
• Hopkins answered just 44 seconds later to knot the score at one as the Blue Jays capitalized on a corner of their own. Junior
Tessa Erickson inserted to senior
Abby Birk at the top of the circle, she took one touch and passed down to her left to junior
Anna Scott. Scott ran onto the pass and banged home her first career goal from 10 yards out.
• The score stood that way until the second half, but it didn't take long for Hopkins to grab the lead. Off another corner, junior
Siena Urbanksi inserted to senior
Maddie Brown-Scherer, who played a behind-the-back pass to Birk. She then ripped a low shot to the far post to put JHU up 2-1 with 10:25 to play in the third. Less than seven minutes later, the lead grew to two. A flurry of shots in the circle, ended when sophomore
Gen Mehra tipped in a long shot from junior
Olivia Fox for her first career goal.
• Urbanski closed out the scoring with 9:50 to play in the game. Senior
Bailey Schwab sent a long pass into the circle and with a defender on her back, Urbanski back-handed a shot past Taylor Bullis from five yards out. Â
Â
What it Means
• Tonight's game was the first-ever meeting between Hopkins and Shenandoah. The game was the result of both teams postponing their original season opener against different opponents. JHU was originally slated to open against Washington & Lee, while Shenandoah was set to host Gettysburg.
Â
Inside the Box Score
• The four Blue Jays goals are their most in a season opener since a 7-0 win over Sweet Briar in 2014. In fact, it was the first opener that was not a one-goal game since that game versus Sweet Briar.
• Four different players scored for Hopkins and Birk had a game-high three points (1g, 1a). She now needs six assists to tie the school record for career assists (31).
• Sophomore
Alexis Loder got the start in goal and made one save in one quarter of action. Junior
Morgan Seward came into the game in the second and made one save over the final 45 minutes. Bullis finished with eight saves for the Hornets, while Jones added a defensive save.
• Hopkins outshot Shenandoah, 19-10, and had more corners (11-7).
Â
Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 4 at Bridgewater. The non-conference contest is slated for a 5:30 pm start.
