Hopkins Opens Conference Play with 2-0 win at Swarthmore

The Basics
• Score: #2 Johns Hopkins-2, Swarthmore-0
• Records: JHU (8-0, 1-0 CC) • SC (5-2, 0-1 CC)
• Location: Swarthmore, PA • Clothier Field
• The Short Story: The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team opened Centennial Conference play with a 2-0 win at host Swarthmore Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins broke a scoreless tie in early in the second quarter off a penalty corner. Freshman Emily Amsden sent the corner up top to senior Sarah Matyas. Matyas drew a double team and then passed to junior Olivia Fox, who took one touch and blasted a shot in the lower left corner 5:17 into the second.
• The Blue Jays added a late goal off a great individual effort from senior Izzy Thompson. The Garnet were restarting deep in their end after a ball out of bounds. Thompson stepped into the passing lane, picked off  the pass and one-timed a shot under a charging Victoria Kimmel to put Hopkins up 2-0 with under five minutes to play.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 22-7 all-time against Swarthmore and has won eight straight in the series. The Blue Jays have not allowed a goal to the Garnet in the last five meetings.
• The Blue Jays extend their season-opening win streak to eight games. That is the longest since 2008 when JHU won its first 11 games.
• Hopkins now needs just one win to earn the 450th win in program history.

Inside the Box Score
• Fox's goal is her first career game-winning goal. Thompson moves into a tie for 24th in school history with her 20th career goal.
• Hopkins has now had 16 different players score a goal this season.
• Junior Morgan Seward and sophomore Alexis Loder shared time in goal, each playing 30 minutes. Seward made one save while Loder did not face a shot on goal. Kimmel finished with six saves in the loss for the Garnet.

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to Homewood Field on Wednesday, September 29 to take on Dickinson. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for 7:00 pm start.
