Hopkins Wins Season Opener....29 Days Later!

The Blue Jays Opener Was Suspended On September 1st Due To A Power Outage

The Basics
• Score: #1 Johns Hopkins-3 • Stevenson-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18)
• Records: #1 Johns Hopkins (12-0, 2-0 CC) • Stevenson (11-4, 1-1 CC) *Technically, this counts as JHU's first game of the season, making them 1-0, but improving the season-record to 12-0*
• Location: Baltimore, MD - Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: After a 29-day delay, the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays have officially started the season 1-0. The win improves the Blue Jays to 12-0 and continues their 47-match winning streak. The power went out on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, forcing a suspension in the middle of the second set.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Back on September 1st, Dickinson jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first set, getting kills from Darian Dildy, Shannon Bail and Piper Connors. JHU took the next four points, getting a kill and an ace from Simone Bliss
• A Sophia Eckerd kill and an attack error on the Blue Jays gave Stevenson a 9-8 lead, but the Mustangs gave a point back with an attack error and Elayna Williams put Hopkins back on top with a kill. After a service error, JHU earned the next four points, getting a pair of kills from Bliss.
• A Sydney Portale kill gave Hopkins its biggest lead of the set at 19-13. After trading points, Stevenson ripped off three straight, cutting the deficit to 21-18 on a Taylor Jones kill. However, Hopkins took the final four points as Bliss put away the set with her fifth kill.
SET TWO
• The second set took a long time...29 days to be exact. Stevenson called a timeout down 18-11 when the lights went out, putting the game on hold for nearly a month.
• Tied 3-3, Bliss, Portale and Eleni Panagopoulos added kills while Natalie Aston picked up a service ace to rip off a four-point run. Another four-point run for JHU, this time with two kills from Williams, put the Jays up 14-8. Bliss added her 10th kill of the match to make it 18-11, forcing a timeout, and apparently a power outage.
• Picking back up on September 30th, Lauren Anthony started off the festivities with a pair of aces. A Danielle Norman kill and another Aston ace gave the Jays a 22-13 lead. Stevenson cut it to seven on a kill from Sarah Straub, but Panagopoulos ended the set with a kill for a 25-17 set victory.

SET THREE
• The third set was more of the same for Hopkins. Stevenson hung in, trailing 8-6 before a 6-0 run for the Jays broke it open. Panagopoulos picked up back-to-back kills to make it 10-6. Mix in a couple of Mustang attack errors, a libero kill from Sarah Khan and a kill from Portale and the Jays had a 14-6 lead.
• The Mustangs fought back, winning five of the next six points. Baily added a pair of kills and Makala Thompson picked up an ace to chip away at the Blue Jay lead. Hopkins responded by winning five of the next seven, getting a pair of kills from Williams in the process.
• An ace off the bench from Kanaan Gemmill followed by a Williams attack error cut the Mustang deficit to four, but Hopkins won five of the final seven points, getting a pair of kills from Norman and a finisher from Aston to win the third set 25-18 and put the bow on another sweep.

What it Means
• The Blue Jay win streak extends to 47, good for fourth-best in Division III history. Not to continue to get technical, but this is actually the 36th win in-a-row for the Jays. If Hopkins were to lose this game, it would retroactively have ended the winning streak at 35 and would have put the Jays on a current 11-game winning streak. Weird. We know.

Inside the Box Score
• Despite not playing in the September 30th portion of the match, Bliss still led the way with 10 kills for Hopkins. Williams and Panagopoulos added nine and eight respectively.
• The Jays hit an impressive .312 for the match, including a red-hot .469 in the third set. Stevenson hit just .087 with Hopkins holding the Mustangs to a .000 hitting percentage in the second.
Roxy Karrer led Hopkins with 10 digs in the match while Evelyn Batista chipped in with eight.

Up Next
•
Hopkins will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Haverford, PA for another Centennial Conference matchup. Following the Haverford match, JHU will matchup with Arcadia as part of a tri-match.
