The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team opened the Philadelphia Invitational with three matches on Friday at Temple. Hopkins beat NJIT, but fell to ranked opponents North Carolina and Princeton.

How it Happened
Hopkins opened the weekend with a hard-fought 14-13 win over MACFA rival NJIT. The Blue Jays used a 9-0 win by the Sabre squad to fuel the win. The Foil squad lost 6-3, while the Epee squad lost 7-2. JHU then fell to 12
th-ranked North Carolina, 17-10, with the Tar Heels sweeping all three weapons. The Blue Jays Foilists lost a close match, 5-4. The Sabre and Epee squads each lost by a 6-3 score. Hopkins ended the day with a 22-5 loss to fourth-ranked Princeton, with the Tigers winning all three weapons. The JHU Sabre squad fell 5-4 in a tightly contested match.

What it Means
• Hopkins earned its second straight win over NJIT for the first time since 2014. The Blue Jays had lost six straight to the Highlanders before this season.
