Joey Epstein and graduate student defenseman
Jack Lyne have been selected in a vote of their teammates to serve as co-captains of the team during the upcoming 2022 season. Dating back to 1950, Epstein becomes just the second three-time team captain, while Lyne is the 14
th two-time captain during that time.
Epstein, who joins Greg Raymond '05 on the select list of three-time Blue Jay captains, has scored 75 goals with 43 assists for 118 points in his career. An Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2021, Epstein scored 22 goals and added 13 assists last season. He led the team in extra-man goals (5) and ranked second in points (35) and assists and fourth in goals. Esptein was a Third Team USILA All-American as a freshman in 2019, when he set JHU freshman records for goals (48) and points (73).
Lyne started all 12 games he played in last season and has started 18 of 19 games in the last two years after battling injuries during his first three seasons. He grabbed 10 ground balls and added six caused turnovers in 2021 and helped the Johns Hopkins defense fuel a Blue Jay run to the Big Ten Championship game. After allowing an average of 13.5 goals in six combined regular season games against Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland, the Blue Jays dropped that average to 9.7 per outing during the Big Ten Tournament.
Johns Hopkins will open the 2022 season on Saturday, February 5 when the Blue Jays welcome Jacksonville to Homewood Field for their first-ever meeting with the Dolphins.
