GETTYSBURG, PA – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team shutout host and 21
st-ranked Gettysburg Saturday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays run their season-opening unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2) while the Bullets suffer their first loss of the season (6-1-2).
Playing through a heavy mist under the lights at Clark Field, it was a back-and-forth affair from the opening whistle. The Bullets' Aidan Muller had the first good look on a shot from the middle of the box, but graduate student
Alex Morgret made the save in the seventh minute. Sophomore
Ian Whamond's free kick just outside the box hit the wall and kicked back to him. He volleyed the rebound just wide of the goal in the 13
th minute.
In the 21
st minute, Morgret made a save off a Nur Adhikarie header in the middle of the box. Ten minutes later, sophomore
Will Sangpachatanaruk skimmed one over the bar from the top left corner of the box.
There was a flurry of opportunities for both teams in a four-minute span, midway through the second half. Muller sent one wide in the 64
th minute and just 80 seconds later, junior
Tyler White missed wide left from the right side of the box. Chase Sempervive missed the mark on a shot on the run in the 69
th minute. Hopkins finally broke through in the 76
th minute on a free kick 20 yards out. Freshman
Giulian Laudisa bent the free kick into the middle of the six-yard box, where junior
Aidan Dunphy headed it home for what turned out to be the gamewinner.
Sempervive had another great look on a header at the back post in the 81
st minute, but again Morgret was there. Whamond had a free kick from 25 yards out in the 87
th minute, but Kevin Muhic punched it away.
Morgret finished with three saves to earn his ninth shutout of the season. Muhic made five saves in the loss for the Bullets. Hopkins had advantages in shots (17-8) and corners (6-2).
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 as the Blue Jays make the short trip to Goucher. The non-conference contest is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
Notes: Morgret extended his shutout streak to 754:41, now the fourth longest in program history • The Blue Jays are unbeaten through their first 10 games for the third time in the last five seasons • Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall are the only two unbeatens left in the Centennial Conference.
