Birk's Pair Leads Johns Hopkins Over McDaniel, 4-0

WESTMINSTER, MD – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored four goals in just over 14 minutes to beat host McDaniel Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action.

Sophomore Grace Nockolds scored what turned out to be the game-winner just 3:31 into the second quarter. Senior Tessa Erickson corralled a rebound in the circle and fired a shot on goal and Nockolds deflected it in at the post. Graduate student Abby Birk doubled the Blue Jays' lead with 4:10 to play in the second. Senior Siena Urbanski inserted a corner to classmate Anna Scott on the near side of the circle. Scott then sent a leading pass to Birk, who fired home a hard shot from 12 yards out.

Hopkins came out firing to start the third quarter. The Blue Jays scored twice in a 65-second span to quickly turn a two-goal game into a four-goal game. Freshman Grace Waldeck opened the third-quarter scoring when she collected her own rebound and chipped the ball over the McDaniel goalie just 2:53 into the quarter. Birk then got her second of the night when she took a pass from senior Siena Urbanski, dribbled across the top of the circle and blasted a shot inside the left post.

Senior Morgan Seward, junior Alexis Loder and freshman Phoebe Williams combined for the shutout. Williams made a pair of saves in 30 minutes of action. Mikayla Smith finished with 15 saves and got a defensive save from Amanda Sponaugle. Hopkins had advantages in shots (36-2) and corners (21-1).

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 15 as the Blue Jays host Muhlenberg. The Centennial Conference game is slated for a 1:00 pm start.

Notes: Hopkins pushed its win streak to seven games, with all seven coming by shutout • The seven straight shutouts are a school record.
