Johns Hopkins Bests Washington College, 5-0

BALTIMORE, MD – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey scored two goals in the first three minutes en route to a 5-0 win over visiting Washington College Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays clinch the top seed in the conference tournament.

Hopkins wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as the Jays scored just 85 seconds in. Sophomore Liz Falterer lifted a long ball 40 yards to senior Tessa Erickson. She collected the pass and dribbled 10 yards, eluding a defender, before slipping a leading pass to graduate student Abby Birk in the circle. Birk ran on to the pass and one-timed a shot inside the right post.

The Blue Jays doubled their lead at the 2:42-mark with the first of two Sadie Abboud goals. Erickson intercepted a pass deep in the Shorewomen zone and fired a shot that Ava Rivera kicked out. The ball rebounded to Abboud, who settled the ball and then hit a hard shot to the left side of the goal.

Abboud made it a three-goal game just 5:27 into the third quarter. Erickson sent a long ball into the circle from near the left sideline. The ball skipped through the defense to Abboud on the back side, who scored from her knees. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Emily Amsden converted a penalty stroke to stake Hopkins to a 4-0 lead.

Junior Gen Mehra closed out the scoring with 3:10 to play in the fourth quarter. Rivera kicked out a tip by Grace Waldeck, but the ball went right to Mehra, who dribbled around a defender and then fired a hard shot to the near post.

Hopkins outshot Washington College 38-3 and had a 13-2 advantage in corners. Senior Morgan Seward, junior Alexis Loder and freshman Phoebe Williams combined for the shutout with Loder making one save. Rivera finished with 17 saves and got a defensive save from Anna Harrington.

Hopkins closes out the regular season on Saturday, October 29 at Bryn Mawr. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
