PHILADELPHIA, PA – Johns Hopkins freshman
Jorge Gana finished in a tie for third at the 42
nd annual Temple Open Sunday. Junior
Qilin Tong also placed in the top-15, as he finished in 11
th place. Gana was one of three Blue Jay freshmen making their collegiate debut.
Gana went 5-3 in pool play and then advanced to the semifinals before losing to the top seed. He finished the day with a 9-4 record. Freshman
Matthew Dao and junior
Gabe Insler each advanced to the round of 32. Dao placed 23
rd overall as he went 6-1 in pool play and 1-1 in the elimination round. Insler finished in a tie for 29
th place after going 5-3 in pool play and 1-1 in the elimination round.
Gana is the first freshman to finish in the top-three at the Temple Open since Sandy Vingoe finished in a tie for third in the Sabre in 2014. Overall, he is just the fifth Blue Jay freshman to place in the top-three at the Temple Open since 2005.
Sophomore
Ethan Kim and senior
Danny Comer each lost their first elimination bout. Kim went 6-2 in pool play and placed 34
th overall, while Comer was 5-3 in pool play and took 39
th place. Senior
Kent Kotaka was 0-4 in the first round of pool play and then went 3-1 in the consolation pool. He finished in a tie for 65
th overall.
In the Foil, sophomore
Alan Zheng led the Blue Jays with a 26
th place finish. He went 6-2 in pool play and then 1-1 in the elimination round. Junior
Anthony Bae took 30
th place in his first ever appearance at the Temple Open. He finished pool play with a 6-3 record and then went 1-1 in the elimination round. Freshman
Spencer Grossman-Smisek finished pool play with a 4-4 record and then lost his first elimination bout to place 33
rd overall.
Competing at the Temple Open for the first time in his career, Tong led the Sabre squad with his 11
th place finish. He went 5-3 in pool play and then advanced to the round of 16 in the elimination round. He finished the day with a 6-4 record. Junior
William Hu placed 22
nd with a 7-3 record overall. He finished pool play with a 6-2 record and then went 1-1 to advance to the round of 32. Senior
Sachin Mehta placed 26
th with a 5-5 overall record. He went 4-4 in pool play and then advanced to the round of 32 in elimination.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 13 at the Vassar Invitational.
