COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Graduate student
Abby Birk and senior
Tessa Erickson had a hand in three goals to lead the eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 4-0 win at Ursinus Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten in Centennial Conference play and run their win streak to six.
Hopkins opened the scoring with 3:08 to play in the first quarter, scoring off a penalty corner. Birk blasted a shot from the top of the circle and Erickson, who had inserted the corner, stepped to the near post and redirected it into the cage for the early score.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Blue Jays wasted little time in the third adding to their lead. Some great passing on a Blue Jay transition led to a two-on-one for freshman
Grace Waldeck and Birk. Waldeck drew the goalie to her before passing to Birk on her left. Birk collected the pass and lifted a shot over Bears' goalie Jordan Ulsh for the score.
JHU then got two in the fourth quarter to put the game away. On another Blue Jay corner, senior
Sadie Abboud collected a loose ball in the circle and slotted a low shot inside the far post 3:25 into the fourth. Hopkins wasn't done yet. As the clock ticked near four minutes to play, Erickson pounced on a loose ball near the left post and banged it home to stake JHU to a 4-0 lead.
Hopkins had a 19-7 advantage in shots, while corners were even at seven apiece. Senior
Morgan Seward, junior
