BALTIMORE, MD – The 19
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team beat visiting Lehman, 3-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Hopkins struck early when junior
Aidan Dunphy was fouled in the box, drawing a penalty kick. Graduate student
Tim Treinen took the kick for the Blue Jays and beat Demiraldo Grunasi for the game's opening goal in the 25
th minute.
Freshman
Scotty Coleman had a nifty back-heel shot that just missed wide left in the 28
th minute. Ten minutes later, he didn't miss. Sophomore
Jacob Hammond sent a great through ball from midfield to Coleman. He ran onto the pass, took one touch and then slotted a right-footed shot inside the near post to stake Hopkins to a 2-0 lead. In the final three minutes of the half, Malik Lashley ripped a shot off a free kick from 20 yards out that just went over the crossbar.
Grunasi made a great one-handed save on a hard shot from junior
Tyler White in the 48
th minute. Dunphy then made a nice run through the defense, but he nicked the left post with his shot in the 58
th minute. Hopkins pushed its lead to three in the 88
th minute. Senior
Axel Whamond dribbled into up the middle of the field and then fired a shot from 25 yards out. Grunasi made a diving save to his left but he was unable to control the ball. Sophomore
Jonathan Cui settled the loose ball and tapped the ball in at the right post.
Hopkins had advantages in shots (22-4) and corners (8-1). Graduate student
Alex Morgret got the start in goal and played nearly 88 minutes without facing a shot on goal. Graduate student
James Ford played the final 2:05 and was not forced to make a save. Grunasi finished with six saves and got a team save.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 13 against the winner of John Carroll and Scranton. Game time is slated at 6:00 pm at Homewood Field.
