MINNEAPOLIS, MD –- The Johns Hopkins football team placed a school-record five players on the 2022 D3football.com All-America Team it was recently announced. The five selections surpass the previous program record of three set twice previously (2015, 2021).
Â
Headlining the selections for the Blue Jays is junior defensive end
Luke Schuermann, who earned a repeat selection to the first team. He was joined by second team honorees
JR Woods (OL-T) and
Nick Seidel (DB-S) and fourth team honorees
Ryan Stevens (QB) and
Emmett Turner (TE).
Â
Schuermann becomes just the second two-time First Team D3football.com All-American in Johns Hopkins history as he joins offensive lineman Colin Egan (2014, 2015) on the exclusive list. Schuermann enjoyed another outstanding season on defense as he totaled 70 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. His 26.5 TFLs and 14 sacks are both Johns Hopkins single-season records and he finished fourth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (2.4) and sixth in sacks per game (1.27). This is the second All-America nod this season for Schuermann as he was previously a second team selection by the Associated Press.
Â
Woods is also a repeat selection as his second team nod this year matches his second team selection from 2021. From his spot at right tackle, Woods helped lead an offense that averaged 43.7 points and 499.4 yards per game. For just the third time in school history, the Blue Jays rushed for more than 2,300 yards (2,375) and threw for more than 3,000 yards (3,118) in a single season. In addition, in more than 400 pass attempts on the year, the Blue Jay offensive line allowed just 15 sacks. Woods joins Egan and Armand Jenifer (2012, 2013) as the only Blue Jay offensive linemen to twice earn All-America honors.
Â
Seidel caps a remarkable career with his selection to the D3football.com All-America Team. Also a First Team All-Centennial and First Team D3football.com All-Region pick, Seidel posted 44 tackles, a team-leading six interceptions, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four pass breakups in 2022. He finished his career with 225 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 13 interceptions and 10 pass breakups to his credit. His 13 interceptions are tied for sixth in school history and he joins Harrison Bernstein (1998), Jack Toner (2015, 2016) and
Macauley Kilbane (2021) as Blue Jay defensive backs who have earned D3football.com All-America honors.
Â
Stevens joined a select fraternity of Blue Jay quarterbacks who have earned All-America honors. Previously, David Tammaro, a second team selection by D3football.com in 2018, was the only Blue Jay quarterback to earn All-America honors from any organization.
Â
Stevens was 241-of 346 (.697) for 2,649 yards with 35 touchdowns against just five interceptions this season. He also rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns on the year. Stevens' 35 touchdown passes tied the JHU single-season record, while his 241 completions (T5th), 346 attempts (8
th) and 2,649 yards (9
th) also rank in the top 10 in school history. Stevens was also named the Centennial Conference and D3football.com Region 2 Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts in 2022.
Â
Turner becomes the first tight end in school history to earn All-America honors with his selection. He capped his career with 44 receptions for 323 yards and four touchdowns this season; the 44 receptions are the most ever by a Blue Jay tight end and he boosted his career totals to 109 receptions for 1,054 yards and seven touchdowns with his effort this season. He adds his All-America nod to First Team All-Centennial and First Team D3football.com All-Region 2 selections this season.
Â
The Johns Hopkins football team posted a 10-1 record and topped Stevenson, 27-7, in the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series. This was the 10
th time the Blue Jays have won 10 or more games in a season with all 10 instances coming since 2003; it was also the 14
th consecutive year that Johns Hopkins has won eight or more games.
