How it Happened
Johns Hopkins rallied from behind to take a late fourth quarter lead, but ultimately dropped its first contest since late November in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson. The Red Devils used a 7-0 run in overtime to pull away for a 62-54 win.
Â
After
Michaela O'Neil split her free throws with 21 seconds remaining, the Blue Jays led it 45-41 over Dickinson. Seven seconds later, Caitlin Blackman hit a three to cut the Blue Jay lead to one.
Diarra Oden split her free throws, putting Hopkins on top 46-44, but Blackman drew a foul with six seconds left, hitting both to send the game to overtime.
Â
Oden scored the first bucket of overtime, making it 48-46 JHU, but the Red Devils outscored the Jays 16-6 over the final 4:24 of the extra period to earn an eight-point win. Oden gave the Jays a 50-48 lead, but Clair Marion answered with a layup to tie it with 3:46 to go. The Red Devils ripped off a 7-0 run, taking a 57-50 lead. The Blue Jays wouldn't score again until the 0:37 mark with a put back layup from
Greta Miller. The Red Devils would go on to win it 62-54.
Needing just 13 points to reach 1,000 for her career, Oden came out on fire, scoring nine points in the first period for Hopkins. After the Jays led it 9-4, the Red Devils jumped ahead with a 7-0 run, but
Christine Corpuz scored the final four points of the quarter to give the Jays a 13-11 lead.
Â
In the second, back-to-back layups from
Erin Walsh and Miller pushed the Blue Jay lead to 17-11. Dickinson cut it to one before Corpuz drilled a three to make it 20-16. A
Jadyn Murray layup extended the lead to six, but the Red Devils scored the next six and the first half ended in a 22-22 deadlock.
Â
The Jays scored just one point in the first five minutes of the third period with Dickinson jumping ahead 29-23. Four straight points from Oden cut it to a two-point game and also gave the senior 1,000 career points. Both teams traded buckets before the Red Devils used a run to take a 37-29 lead.
Â
The fourth quarter was all Blue Jays until the late Dickinson buckets forced OT. Oden started the quarter with a three-point play, cutting the deficit to five. Another Oden jumper cut it to three before a pair of O'Neil free throws made it 37-36 Red Devils. After a Red Devil free throw, Murray tied the contest at 38 each with 6:39 to play. With 5:07 left, Oden put the Jays back on top with a jumper before O'Neil extended the lead to three with a layup. Oden was the leading scorer for the contest with 27 points.
