Dillard, Steuerer Pace Blue Jays in 12-2 Win Over MIT

Blue Jays Use Seven-Run Seventh to Break Game Open

• Score: #4 Johns Hopkins-12, MIT-2
• Records: JHU (1-1) • MIT (0-2)
• Pitching Decision: W: Dillard (1-0) • L: Katz (0-1)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team got 6.1 innings of four-hit pitching from Matthew Dillard and the Blue Jays put up a seven-spot in the seventh inning to fuel a 12-2 win over MIT in the fourth game of the Baltimore Invitational on Saturday.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays scratched out single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth to grab a 4-0 lead.    Tripp Myers stole home in the second and AJ King laced an RBI-double in the sixth to highlight the first four runs for the Blue Jays.

• A Graham Cartwright RBI-single in the top of the seventh for the Engineers cut the deficit to 4-1, but that three-run deficit was short-lived as the big seventh inning for the Blue Jays came a short time later and put the game away.

• Hopkins scored all seven runs with just one hit, but it was a big one as freshman Shawn Steuerer blasted a grand slam to left to turn a 7-1 lead into an 11-1 advantage.  All seven runs came with two outs as the Blue Jays used the Steuerer slam, an MIT error, three walks and two hit batters to ignite the seven-run rally.

• MIT got a solo home run from Phil Hood in the top of the eighth and Hopkins scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to account for the final scoring.

 Inside the Box Score
• Dillard was in complete control throughout as he struck out six, induced five ground outs and six fly outs.  The only run he allowed was unearned and he didn't surrender a walk in picking up his and the team's first win of the year.

• Steuerer had a game-high three hits, including the grand slam.  King and James Ingram added two-hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who picked up 10 hits against six MIT pitchers.

• Cartwright, Nick Aiello and Kyle Sonandres all collected two hits for the Engineers, but MIT managed just two other hits and drew just a pair of walks while striking out nine times against three Blue Jay pitchers.

What It Means
• The Blue Jays improve to 4-1 all-time against MIT with the four previous meetings all taking place between 1955-1964.

Up Next
• Hopkins will close out play in the Baltimore Invitational on Sunday afternoon when the Blue Jays play North Carolina Wesleyan.  First pitch is tentatively set for 2:15 pm (game will follow the Cortland-MIT game).
