Cooper Leaves The Yard Three Times To Lead Jays To 16-1 Win Over McDaniel

• Score: Johns Hopkins - 16, McDaniel - 1
• Records: JHU (18-13, 8-4 CC) • MCD (18-14, 3-9 CC)
• Pitching Decision: W: Dillard (4-4) • L – Valentine (4-1)
• The Short Story: Matthew Cooper hit three of the Blue Jays five home runs, helping the Jays score 10 of their 16 runs in the first three innings to earn a Friday victory over McDaniel.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jay bats struck first, jumping on McDaniel starter Jack Valentine for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. AJ King singled up the middle with one out, moving up to second a base knock to right from Shawn Steuerer. With two away, Tripp Myers stepped up to the plate and blasted a ball onto University Parkway, a three-run shot to put the Jays up 3-0.
• Things didn't get easier for Valentine in the second inning, allowing four more to give the Jays a 7-0 lead. Dylan Whitney hit a leadoff single right back up the middle and Matthew Cooper pounced on a one-out pitch, sending it over the wall in left to make it a 5-0 ball game. King followed with a double to left center and Steuerer singled to left to put a pair of runners on. With two away, Myers hit a ground rule double to right center, scoring King and moving Steuerer up to third. The final run of the inning came via a wild pitch, scoring Steuerer.
• The warm(er) weather in Baltimore brought out the big fly as Hopkins got another home run in the third. Once again it was Whitney leading off the inning with a single up the middle. Jack Walters doubled off the wall in right, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Cooper. This time Cooper went to the opposite field, leaving the ballpark for the second time in just the first three innings.
• Stop me if you've heard this before, Cooper hit a homer. Number three on the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the Blue Jay lead to 12-0. Whitney reached on an error before the two-run shot by Cooper.
• After giving up a run on a solo shot in the top of the sixth to Joey Hubinger, the Jays answered back with one more in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch-hitting for Cooper who had homered in three straight at-bats from the leadoff spot, Sam Browning homered over the left field wall to make it 13-1.
• Last, but certainly not least, Hopkins tacked on three eighth inning runs to push them up to 16 for the game. Jimmy Nunez and Jake Siani both picked up their first career hits. The Jays loaded the bases on an error by the McDaniel third baseman. Noah Clement bounced one back to the pitcher, who couldn't make the play, scoring Nunez. James Ingram drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Siani while a Matthew Chang fielder's choice scored Jimmy Stevens to make it 16-1.

Inside the Box Score
• Cooper homered three times, driving in seven runs to lead the JHU offense. Cooper now leads the team with 10 home runs in 2022. Already the team leader in RBI coming into the day, Cooper upped his total to 38 runs batted in.
• Myers added a homer and a double to the Blue Jay cause, driving in four runs on the day. For the season, Myers now has seven homers, seven doubles and 31 runs batted in.
• King & Steuerer combined for seven hits on the day, raising their averages to .403 and .412 respectively. Steuerer is looking to become the first freshman Blue Jay to hit .400 or better in the BBCOR era. King hit .408 in last season's COVID-shortened campaign.
Matthew Dillard was lights out on the mound, continuing his strong showing from Saturday when he retired 20 of the final 21 batters. Dillard threw 7.0 innings, allowed just six hits and one run, and struck out nine batters. Dillard has struck out 52 batters in 57.2 innings.

What's Next
• Johns Hopkins will travel to Allentown, PA tomorrow for an afternoon doubleheader with the Muhlenberg Mules.
