Johns Hopkins-Ohio State Men's Lacrosse Notes

Blue Jays Head to Columbus for B1G Test Against Buckeyes

The Game
• Johns Hopkins (5-6, 1-1 B1G) heads to Columbus, Ohio to take on ninth-ranked Ohio State (7-3, 1-1) in the only Big Ten men's lacrosse game on Saturday, April 9.  Faceoff is set for 12 pm with a live national television audience (ESPNU).

Last Time Out
•  Johns Hopkins slipped to 1-1 in the Big Ten with a 12-7 loss at fourth-ranked Rutgers on Sunday night.
• Ohio State bounced back from a league-opening loss at Rutgers with an 18-9 victory at home against Penn State last Friday night.

The Facts
•  This is the 135th season of Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse.  JHU first fielded a team in 1883.
•  Johns Hopkins enters this weekend's games with an all-time record of 1,002-361-15 (.733).
•  JHU owns 44 national championships with nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA crowns to its credit.

First to 1,000
•  Johns Hopkins became the first men's lacrosse program in history to reach 1,000 all-time victories with an 11-10 win over Loyola (2-19-22).
• With the win (and subsequent results), the Blue Jays are 1,002-361-15 all-time and sit 74 wins ahead of Syracuse on the all-time victories list among Division I men's lacrosse programs.

On This Date
•  This week's game against Ohio State will be the 10th all time for Johns Hopkins on April 9 dating back to 1950.  The Blue Jays are 6-3 all-time on this date.
• Included among the nine previous games Johns Hopkins has played on this date are two against Ohio State in 2016 and 2017.  The Blue Jays topped the Buckeyes, 13-12, at home in 2016, but fell at OSU, 13-9, a year later.

Series History
•  This week's game will be the 16th all-time meeting between Johns Hopkins and Ohio State.  The Blue Jays lead the all-time series 9-6, although the Buckeyes have won three straight against JHU.
• The Buckeyes picked up a pair of wins against the Blue Jays in 2021 with a season-opening 14-8 win at Homewood Field and a 14-12 win in Columbus.
• The series dates to a 17-8 Johns Hopkins victory in 1999 and JHU has won 9-of-15 against the Buckeyes.  OSU has not lost to the Blue Jays in Columbus since the Big Ten added men's lacrosse in 2015.

Johns Hopkins and the Big Ten
•  The Blue Jays have reached the midway point of their 2022 Big Ten schedule with this week's game at Ohio State.  Johns Hopkins joined the Big Ten as a sport affiliate member in 2015, the first year the league offered men's lacrosse as a championship sport.
• Since the league was formed, the Blue Jays are tied for the league-lead in all-time appearances in the Big Ten title game (5) and rank second in Big Ten Tournament titles (2).  The seven games JHU has won in the Big Ten Tournament are tied for the most in league history.
• Including games played before the Big Ten was formed in 2015, Johns Hopkins is 138-67-1 (.672) all-time against teams currently competing in the Big Ten.

Poll Position
•  Johns Hopkins is listed as receiving votes in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week.
•  Ohio State is ranked in the top 10 in both the USILA Coaches Poll (9th) and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (9th) this week.

Strength of Schedule
•  The strength of JHU's 2022 schedule has been well documented since head coach Peter Milliman announced the schedule last fall.  The strength of the schedule has played out as expected with a quick look at the opposition's record to date bearing that out.
• To-date, the 11 opponents the Blue Jays have played have compiled a record of 66-32  ... that .673 opponent winning percentage ranks fourth in the nation.
• The Blue Jays' three remaining opponents currently have a combined record of 18-11 ... that .621 winning percentage of future opposition gives the Blue Jays the 15th-toughest remaining schedule in the nation.
• Overall, JHU's 14 regular season opponents are currently a combined 84-43 ... that .661 opponent winning percentage ranks as the third-highest in the nation.

Balance on Offense
• A quick look at the stat sheet reveals the Blue Jays feature a balanced scoring unit through the first 11 games of the season.
• Johns Hopkins has seven players with eight or more points, eight players with at least four goals and four players with 10 or more assists.
• In all, 18 different players have already scored at least one goal and 20 players have at least one point to their credit through 11 games.  The 18 players who have scored a goal this season in 11 games is already two more than scored a goal for the Blue Jays in 13 games last season.

Causing Trouble-Part I
•  Johns Hopkins was credited with 11 caused turnovers in the 11-8 season-opening win against Jacksonville, added 10 against Navy, 11 at Delaware, nine against Michigan and eight at Rutgers; in all, the Blue Jays have totaled 84 CTs through 11 games.
• The 11 caused turnovers at Delaware mark the 18th time in school history that JHU has had 10 or more caused turnovers in a game (CTs became an official stat in 2009).

Causing Trouble-Part II
•  In its last four games, Johns Hopkins has been credited with 10 (Navy), 11 (Delaware), nine (Michigan) and eight (Rutgers)  caused turnovers.  This marks the first time since caused turnovers became an official statistic in 2009 that JHU has caused 8+ turnovers in four consecutive games.

Extra-Extra
• JHU has converted on 11-of-27 (.407) extra-man chances through 11 games and ranks 27th in the nation in extra-man offense.  Amazingly, in three of the last six games the Blue Jays have not had an extra-man opportunity.
• Seven different players have an scored extra-man goal on the year - Garrett Degnon, Joey Epstein, Brendan Grimes, Jack Keogh, Johnathan Peshko, Scott Smith - and 10 of the 11 have been assisted.
• Johns Hopkins converted on 15-of-35 (.429) extra-man chances in 2021 to finish tied for 12th nationally in extra-man offense.
• Epstein is JHU's career active leader in EMO goals with 13, while Degnon has nine to his credit.
•  The Blue Jays' 42.9% conversion percentage last season marked the eighth time since 2012 that Hopkins has finished the season at better than 40% on extra-man.

•  The Blue Jays' 51-man roster includes nine graduate students, nine seniors, nine juniors, 13 sophomores and 11 freshmen.
