Box Score COLUMBUS, OH – The ninth-ranked Ohio State men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Johns Hopkins 4-1 in the fourth quarter to fuel a 12-10 win over the Blue Jays at Ohio Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win improves The Buckeyes' record to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, while the Blue Jays slip to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the B1G.
Â
Johns Hopkins had 9-8 lead at the end of the third quarter after
Ryan Evans scored in transition, but the Buckeyes needed less than a minute of the fourth quarter to tie things up and took the lead for good two minutes after that.
Â
After the Blue Jay defense got a fourth-quarter-opening stop, Ohio State's Jackson Reid intercepted a clearing pass and scored into an open net to ignite the game-ending run for the Buckeyes. Scott White then scored on a step-down two minutes later and Jack Myers found Connor Mitchell all alone on the backdoor after fighting through a double team to cap the three-goal run – the only three-goal run of the game for either team.
Â
Johns Hopkins sliced the 11-9 deficit to one with 7:57 on the clock when
Garrett Degnon got to the middle after a quick head fake, but Johnny Wiseman's second of the day less than a minute later closed out the scoring as neither team found the net in the final seven minutes.
Â
A back-and-forth first half saw five ties before the Buckeyes scored three of the final four goals before intermission to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead at the half.
Â
After spotting the Buckeyes a one-goal lead and going more than 10 minutes without a goal to open the game, the Blue Jays struck for three goals in the final 4:29 of the period to grab a 3-2 lead at the end of the first. Keogh scored on the run at the 4:29 mark to break the ice and
Emmett Jennings found
Jacob Angelus alone in the middle of the field after a failed OSU clearing attempt to give JHU a 2-1 lead. The teams traded goals in the final minute of the opening quarter with Degnon's 25
th goal of the season with 9.3 seconds left in the period giving JHU a 3-2 lead at the end of one.
Â
The Blue Jays had a 4-3 lead when Evans finished a nice two-man game with Angelus with just over 11 minutes showing on the second-quarter clock, but back-to-goals from Reid in a three-minute span midway through the period gave the Buckeyes a 5-4 lead.Â
Johnathan Peshko and Myers then traded goals in the final six minutes of the half to account for the 6-5 Buckeye lead at halftime.
Â
Johns Hopkins outscored the Buckeyes 4-2 in the third quarter to grab the 9-8 lead. After Keogh and Wiseman traded goals to open the period, the Blue Jays got consecutive goals from Degnon and
Connor DeSimone in a 78-second span to go up 8-7. Reid's fourth of the game followed 48 seconds after the DeSimone extra-man goal before Evans gave the Blue Jays their fifth and final lead of the game with his transition goal with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
