Back-To-Back: Kadiri Takes Long Jump Gold...Again!

Geneva, OH – Ho hum. She did it again. In just two seasons, Victoria Kadiri has proven there is no moment too big and no height she cannot reach. After becoming the first Indoor National Champion in program history, Kadiri took gold again, this time becoming the first outdoor champion since 2003. The sophomore needed a miraculous walk-off jump to win back in March, but Kadiri's fourth jump did the trick tonight. The Lynn, MA native cleared a 6.03m jump to win the national championship and become just the second two-time national champion in school history, joining Hopkins Hall of Famer Sylke Knuppel.

Thursday Tidbits
  • Graduate Annie Gutierrez sits firmly in the mix for All-America contention after day one of the heptathlon. Knocking out four of the seven events, Gutierrez sits in fourth place with 3,026 points after a strong Thursday showing. The Floridian opened Thursday's championships with a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles. Gutierrez ran in the final heat, finishing in 14.29 seconds, a personal best time, earning her 938 points. Next up for Gutierrez was the high jump. Gutierrez finished in a five-way tie for fourth with a 1.61m jump, a new PR. The jump earned her 747 points. Next up was the shot put and another PR for Gutierrez who placed 13th with a 9.85m throw, earning her 520 points. Last, but not least, she placed sixth in the 200m dash to earn 821 points with a finishing time of 25.73, you guessed it, a new PR.
  • After earning her first career track & field All-America honor in March, Alex Ross adds another All-America honor to her career tally as she placed third in the 10,000 on Thursday night. The senior captain just missed an All-America nod in the event a year ago, but her time of 35:20.26 was good for third-place and less than three seconds shy of second.
  • Sara Stephenson ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase prelims, grabbing the final qualifying spot for Saturday's final. With the top 12 advancing, Stephenson ran the race in 11:00.06 to grab the final qualifying spot. She finished over three seconds clear of the 13th-place time.
  • Gutierrez placed in a tie for 14th in the pole vault, hitting her mark at 3.60m, but failing to clear 3.70m. She also placed 17th in the long jump, hitting a 5.44m leap.
  • Competing in her first NCAA Championship with the Blue Jays, Bridgid Selfors took 16th in the 10,000 on Thursday night. Selfors finished in 37:17.30.
Team Performance
  • The Jays sit with 16 total points over six scored events and hold first place after day one of the NCAA Championships.

Gutierrez will open up day two for JHU with the final three events of the heptathlon kicking off at 11 am. Lauren Phillips will look to qualify for Saturday's 400m final in the early evening.
