BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins head track and field and cross-country coach
Bobby Van Allen has announced the hiring of
Zach Brown as the program's new assistant coach. Brown will oversee all sprints, hurdles and relays.
"We're thrilled to welcome Zach to our coaching staff," said Van Allen. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to our program combined with a tremendous history of development of talent."
Brown arrives at Homewood with an extensive background as both an elite athlete and a collegiate coach across multiple NCAA divisions, including stints at Stevenson University and, most recently, Towson University. He served as an assistant coach at Towson during the 2024-25 season, primarily coaching the short sprints, hurdles and pole vault. He played an integral role in the success of the women's track and field team, which captured six individual Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) titles and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Indoor Team Championship.
"I'm really excited to join Coach Van Allen and the Hopkins team," said Brown. "I'm looking forward to helping Hopkins continually chase NCAA team podium finishes and championships. It's exciting to have the opportunity to contribute to such a successful program."
Before his time at Towson, Brown spent three seasons (2021-24) as the head coach at SUNY Delhi, where he mentored five All-Americans, the 2022 men's 100-meter national runner-up and three USTFCCCA Regional Track Athletes of the Year. He also contributed to six North Atlantic Conference (NAC) team championships and earned recognition as the 2024 USTFCCCA Niagara Regional Coach of the Year.
From 2017 to 2021, Brown made stops at Centennial Conference foe Dickinson (2017-18), Stevenson (2018-20), and Division I Colgate University (2021), all in an assistant coaching capacity. His tenure at Stevenson yielded two All-American performances alongside the 2018-19 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men's Indoor and Outdoor Team Titles, culminating in his selection as the 2019 USTFCCCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year.
A 2014 graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport, Brown enjoyed a standout career on the track as a two-time NCAA Division III All-American in the 4x100-meter relay (2014, 2015), a two-time ECAC Outdoor Champion in the 4x100 and 4x400 and a two-time SUNYAC Outdoor Champion in the 400 and 4x100. He was also selected to the 2010-20 SUNYAC All-Decade Team.
Brown holds a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in coaching and a Master of Science in Athletic Administration from SUNY Brockport.
He steps into his new role with a Johns Hopkins program coming off a stellar 2025-26 campaign, highlighted by 21 combined men's and women's outdoor All-American performances and a third-place finish by the women's team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
