Geneva, OH – After sitting in fourth-place after day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, graduate
Annie Gutierrez finished the job on Friday, earning a third-place finish and All-America honors for her outstanding efforts. The Floridian shattered the Hopkins program and Centennial Conference records, battling her way to 5,064 points. Gutierrez started the day off with a bang, winning the heptathlon long jump with a 5.81m leap to earn 792 points. Gutierrez sat in second after the event before heading to the javelin. Gutierrez blew past her PR in the javelin to place 13
th with a 28.77m throw, earning 453 points and keeping her firmly in the hunt. She sat in fourth before the final event, but placed third in the 800 to bump her up to third overall. Gutierrez shaved over three seconds off her previous career best, running the race in 2:22.24 to grab 793 points and finish third overall.
After qualifying as a freshman in the 400,
Lauren Phillips placed 17
th in the prelims with a time of 57.33. Her standout freshman campaign comes to a close as she finishes shy of the qualification mark for Saturday's final.
As of writing (3:20 pm), the Blue Jays remain in first place with 22 points, one point ahead of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
It will be a busy Saturday for
Bobby Van Allen's squad as the race for the championship continues.
Sara Stephenson will run the Steeplechase at 1130 am after qualifying in the final spot yesterday.
Victoria Kadiri will look to add some more hardware as she competes in the triple jump at 145 pm.
Ella Baran,
Alex Ross, Lina Spjut, and Stephenson are scheduled to run the 5,000 to close things out at 3 pm.
