BALTIMORE, MD – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team fell to third-ranked Rowan, 2-1, in non-conference action at Homewood Field Saturday. The Blue Jays fall to 3-1 on the season while the Profs remain unbeaten at 4-0.
After a scoreless first half, it was Rowan that broke through for the game's first goal. Julia Cavicchio fired a hard shot from the top of the circle off a Profs' corner that was blocked. Kristiina Castagnola then batted the rebound out of the air and into the goal just 2:36 into the third to put Rowan up 1-0.
With just over 10 minutes to play in the game, Julia Patrone dribbled from midfield into the circle before slotting a low shot to the right corner to push Profs' lead to two. The Blue Jays answered three and a half minutes later to pull back within one. Off a restart near the top of the circle, freshman
Megan Chang took two touches and then blasted a shot into the back of the cage to make it 2-1.
Hopkins had three good looks at the cage in the closing minutes but the Jays were unable to get the equalizer.
Hopkins had a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 16-11 advantage in corners. Junior
Alexis Loder and freshman
Phoebe Williams each made a save for the Blue Jays, and senior
Anna Scott added a defensive save. The Profs' Abby Hainsworth finished with 10 saves in the win. Chang's goal was the first of her career.
