SALISBURY, MD – Host and sixth-ranked Salisbury scored on a penalty stroke less than two minutes into overtime to defeat the third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team, 2-1, Wednesday night in non-conference action.
Hopkins struck first, cashing in on a penalty corner less than five minutes into the game. Senior
Tessa Erickson hit a hard shot from the right side of the circle off the corner, but Mackenzie Peacock made the save. Senior
Siena Urbanski collected the loose ball and slid a low shot inside the left post at 4:42 to stake the Blue Jays to the early lead.
Salisbury answered just a few minutes later to knot the score at one. Molly Reardon dribbled along the right endline and into the circle. She centered the ball to Allie Davis, who took one touch, and then fired a shot to the right post at 10:39.
The defenses would take over from there as neither team could get the go-ahead goal in nearly 50 minutes of regulation. Less than two minutes into the first overtime, the Sea Gulls drew a penalty stroke. Davis scored on a low, hard shot just inside the left post to lift Salisbury to the win.
Hopkins had a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.
