Johns Hopkins Tops Washington College, 5-1

BALTIMORE, MD – Five different Blue Jays scored to lead the third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Washington College in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference, while the Shorewomen slip to 7-5 on the season and 3-2 in the CC.

Hopkins jumped on Washington College early, scoring three goals in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays opened the scoring just 3:08 into the game. Junior Ava Balacek dribbled along the right endline before slipping a pass through a trio of defenders to sophomore Zoey Bennett, who banged it in at the back post. A little over six minutes later, senior Siena Urbanski dribbled past three defenders before centering the ball, where Shorewomen goalie Charlotte Schurman got a pad on it. The ball ricocheted right back to Urbanski and she slotted it home.

Senior Gen Mehra capped the three-goal first quarter at the 13:32-mark. Bennett collected the ball at the top of the circle and then threaded a pass under a defender to Mehra, who one-timed it into the cage. Midway through the second quarter, Balacek took the ball away from WC, dribbled into the circle and then banged a shot off a defender and in to put JHU up 4-0.

Freshman Sophia Albano pushed the lead to five just 55 seconds into the third quarter. Off a restart, junior Sophie Gomez fired a pass into the circle that found Albano on the back post. She settled the ball, spun around her defender and fired home her first career goal.

Washington College ended Hopkins' bid at a shutout with 8:39 left. Kate Gromacki took a shot from the top of the circle and Brynn Balliet tipped it past senior Alexis Loder to make it 5-1.

Hopkins outshot Washington, 15-1, and had a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Loder, sophomore Phoebe Williams and freshman Aubrey Kilgore split time in the cage with Loder and Kilgore each making a save. Schurman finished with seven saves and got a defensive save from Gromacki.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 14 as the Blue Jays host the Bryn Mawr Owls. The Centennial Conference game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.

Notes: Urbanski is now tied for 19th in JHU history with 57 career points • She is also tied for 17th with 24 career goals • This was Balacek's second career three-point game • This was Bennett's first career three-point game.
