Johns Hopkins Rallies to Beat Bryn Mawr, 2-1

BALTIMORE, MD – The third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored with 1:55 remaining in regulation to beat visiting Bryn Mawr Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays move to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Owls fall to 7-6 and 2-4 in the CC.

Bryn Mawr struck first as the Owls capitalized on a penalty corner early in the second quarter. Maggie Barilla swept a low shot through the defense and in at the left post to stake Bryn Mawr to the 1-0 lead just 2:58 into the second.

Hopkins answered back off a penalty corner of its own. Senior Mikayla Schoff took a hit at the top of the circle and classmate Siena Urbanski tipped it around Owls' goalie Charlene Basque. Junior Ava Balacek was at the back post and redirected the ball in at the goal line to knot the score with 4:56 to go in the half.

The Blue Jays then got what turned out to be the game-winner late in regulation. Balacek inserted the corner to just Liz Falterer at the top of the circle. She settled the ball and then fired a hard shot just inside the right post.

Hopkins outshot Bryn Mawr, 13-6, and had a 14-7 advantage in corners. Senior Alexis Loder finished with three saves in the win while Basque made four saves.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 18 as the Blue Jays travel to Westminster, MD to take on McDaniel. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 6:00 pm start.

Notes: Johns Hopkins has now won 36 straight Centennial Conference regular season games – the third longest streak in conference history • This is the fourth straight game between the Blue Jays and Owls that was decided by one goal.
