Smith served as the Blue Jay head coach in 1951 and 1954 and spent the better part of the following 33 years as an assistant coach and mentor under the direction of Scott (1955-74), Ciccarone (1975-83) and Zimmerman (1984-87). During that time, the Blue Jays won 13 national championships with six USILA titles and the first seven of the program's nine NCAA titles.
Smith's final in-person game with the Blue Jays came in the 1987 NCAA Semifinals, when Johns Hopkins upset top-ranked and top-seeded rival Maryland, 13-8, to advance to the national championship game, which they would win with an 11-10 victory over Cornell. Three weeks later, he passed away.
Smith graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1950 after a playing career that saw him earn All-America honors four times and help the Blue Jays to four consecutive USILA National Championships. Smith's famed class of 1950 went unbeaten against collegiate opponents over its four seasons with its only four losses coming against the Mount Washington Club team. At the conclusion of his career, he was named to the All-Time Johns Hopkins Team.
This will be the third Hall of Fame that Smith is inducted into as he was previously inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1979 and was a charter member of the Johns Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame when it added its first class in 1994.
