WASHINGTON, DC – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Division I Howard Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 1-2 on the season while the Bison improve to 1-2.
Howard grabbed the doubles point with wins at first and third. Graduate student
Mary Beth Hurley and senior
Emily Javedan earned a win for the Blue Jays with a 6-1 win over Yemisi Ifederu and Emnet Siimunyola at second. Nadia Pegram and Selah Stibbins then defeated freshmen
Kamila Wong and
Jay Xiao, 6-2, at first. The doubles point came down to third doubles, with Howard's Alexandra Blackwell and Jordan Grayson beating freshman
Niamh Harding and senior
Christina Huynh, 6-4.
Grayson opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Xiao at first to put the Bison up 2-0. Pegram then beat Wong 6-4, 6-2 at third. Ifederu followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at fourth over senior
Anjali Devireddy. Huynh grabbed a point for the Blue Jays when she beat Blackwell 6-2, 6-4 at fifth. Siimunyola answered with a close 6-4, 6-3 win over Harding at sixth. Hurley wrapped up the match with a come-from-behind 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6) victory over Stibbins at second.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, February 19 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play. JHU travels to Lancaster, PA to take on Franklin & Marshall at 3:00 pm.
