Johns Hopkins Picks Up Four Wins to Tie Single Season Wins Record

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won four of its five matches on Sunday and tied the program's single-season wins record with 26. JHU is now 26-10 overall on the season.
 
Hopkins dropped its first match of the day, falling to NJIT 16-11. Junior Qilin Tong won two of his three bouts in a tough 5-4 loss for the Sabre squad. Junior Anthony Bae, freshman Spencer Grossman Smisek and sophomore Alan Zheng won one bout each in a 6-3 loss for the Foil squad. Freshman Matthew Dao earned two wins to lead the Epee squad in a 5-4 loss.
 
JHU bounced back with a 20-7 win over Stevens. Seniors Sachin Mehta and David DeScherer and junior William Hu each won two bouts as the Sabre squad earned a 6-3 win. Grossman Smisek won all three of his bouts to lead the Foil squad to a 7-2 win. Dao turned the same trick as he led the Epee squad to a 7-2 victory.
 
The Blue Jays followed that with a 26-1 win over the Army Black Knights. Tong and DeScherer combined for six wins to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Grossman Smisek and sophomore Pranav Shibu did the same as the Foil squad won 9-0. And in the Epee, it was junior Gabe Insler and senior Danny Comer with a combined six wins as the squad won 8-1.
 
Hopkins then beat Yeshiva 27-0. Tong again won all three of his bouts and the Sabre squad earned a 9-0 win. Shibu also won each of his three bouts to lead the Foil squad to a 9-0 victory. Dao and Comer won a combined six bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 9-0 win.
 
JHU wrapped up the day with a 27-0 win over Hunter. Freshman Alex Jeffords won all three of his bouts to lead the Sabre squad in a 9-0 win. Bae, Grossman Smisek and Shibu combined for nine wins for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, Dao, Insler and Comer won all nine of their bouts.
