Gana Places Sixth at NCAA Regional; Grossman Smisek Reaches 100 Wins

EASTON, PA – Freshman Jorge Gana led the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday. In addition, freshman Spencer Grossman Smisek reached 100 wins for the season.

Gana went 15-11 on the day to finish in sixth place among 36 fencers. He was the top Division III fencer in the Epee. His sixth-place finish is the best by a Blue Jay in the Epee since Tiger Gao placed fourth in 2018. In addition, it is the highest finish by a freshman in the Epee since Dan Zielinski finished in fifth place in 2006. Freshman Matthew Dao finished in 13th place with an 8-7 record on the day. Junior Gabe Insler placed 20th (4-6) and sophomore Ethan Kim finished in 36th (0-5).

In the Foil, sophomore Alan Zheng led the Blue Jays with an 11th place finish out of 36. He was also the top DIII fencer in the Foil. He finished the day with a 10-11 mark. Grossman Smisek placed 20th with a 5-5 record and junior Anthony Bae took 21st place with a 4-6 record. Grossman Smisek reached the 100-win plateau with his fourth win of the day. He is just the third freshman, in any weapon, to win 100 bouts in a season. He joins Bryan Bishe (Foil, 2002) and Matt Boulbousasis (Epee, 2001) to accomplish the feat.

Freshman Alex Jeffords led the Sabre squad with an 11th place finish, out of 36 fencers. He went 11-15 on the day and was the top DIII fencer in the weapon. Senior David DeScherer placed 12th, a career-best, with a 12-13 record. Junior William Hu went 4-6 to finish in 14th place. Junior Qilin Tong placed 17th with an 8-6 record and senior Sachin Mehta took 27th place with a 2-3 record.

Notes: Insler now ranks 20th in program history with 148 career Epee wins • DeScherer moved into 17th place with 171 Sabre wins.
