BALTIMORE, MD – Sixth-ranked Stony Brook scored six of the final seven goals to come-from-behind to beat host Johns Hopkins, 12-9, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Blue Jays fall to 4-6 on the season while the Seawolves improve to 7-2.
Hopkins trailed 6-4 with 9:33 to play in the third after Stony Brook scored twice in just nine seconds.
Megan Kielbasa then scored back-to-back goals in a 34-second span to spark a four-goal Blue Jay run in four minutes and four seconds. Kielbasa ignited the run with a free position goal at 5:26. Some tic-tac-toe passing ended with
Abbey Hurlbrink slipping a pass to a cutting Kielbasa, who fired a shot past Hailey Duchnowski.
Ava Angello then put Hopkins with a shot that deflected off the Duchnowski's stick, bounced in the crease and into the goal.
Charlotte Smith capped the run with a free-position goal, her second of the game, to stake JHU to an 8-6 lead at the end of three.
Ellie Masera opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals to put Stony Brook back on top, 9-8, at the 8:53-mark.
Bailey Cheetham answered 90 seconds later, taking a pass from
Campbell Case and picking the bottom left corner with just five seconds on the possession clock. Kailyn Hart scored on a left-handed sidearm shot with 6:17 to play to ignite a three-goal game-ending run for the Seawolves as they took the 12-9 win.
Cheetham opened the scoring with a free position goal just 85 seconds in to give Hopkins the early 1-0 lead. Masera tied the game with a transition goal late in the quarter and it was 1-1 after one. Morgan Mitchell then put Stony Brook on top with a free position goal just 13 seconds into the second. Smith responded with the first of her four goals to tie the game and kick-start a run where the teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter. Smith accounted for all three Blue Jay goals in the quarter as the team went into the half tied at four.
Hart and Masera scored back-to-back goals in that nine-second span early in the third quarter to put the Seawolves up 6-4. Setting the stage for the final 21 minutes where the teams combined for 11 goals.
Smith led the Blue Jays with a career-high four goals, while Kielbasa and Cheetham added two goals each. Angello (1g, 1a) and Case (2a) also finished with two points.
Annie Marshall had a game-high-tying six draws, while
Hannah Johnson and
Haleigh Moore had two caused turnovers each.
Maggie Tydings finished with 10 saves in the cage. Masera led Stony Brook with a game-high five goals and also controlled six draws. Hart (2g, 1a), Mitchell (2g) and Jaden Hampel (1g, 2a) also had multi-point days.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday as the Blue Jays host the 25
th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 11:00 am.
