Johns Hopkins Upends 20th-Ranked Swarthmore, 6-3

SWARTHMORE, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team upended host and 20th-ranked Swarthmore, 6-3, on Saturday in a rematch of last year's Centennial Conference (CC) title match. The Blue Jays win their ninth straight match and improve to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the CC. The Garnet fall to 9-2 on the season, including 4-1 in the conference.  
 
Hopkins led 2-1 after doubles and then won four of the six singles matches, including the last three, to take the win over Swarthmore. Kamila Wong and Jay Xiao put the Blue Jays on top early when they beat Natalie Williams and Crystal Xu, 8-4, at first doubles. Spencer Watts and Oviya Kumaran answered for the Garnet with an 8-5 win over Christina Huynh and Niamh Harding at third. Mary Beth Hurley and Emily Javedan put Hopkins back on top with a hard-fought 8-7 (7) win at second over Kathleen Shiffer and Erica Stutz.
 
Hurley grabbed a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles over Stutz. Swarthmore responded with wins at third and first singles to tie the match at three. Shiffer won 6-2, 6-2 over Wong at third and Williams followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at first over Xiao.
 
Huynh gave the lead back to the Blue Jays when she beat Lola Diaz 6-1, 7-5 at fifth. Anjali Devireddy then clinched the victory for Hopkins with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (8) victory at fourth over Jenny Lewis. Harding then defeat3ed Lisa Messier 6-2, 7-5 at sixth to close out the win.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 as the Blue Jays host the Dickinson Red Devils. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
 
Notes: Hurley now needs just three wins to reach 100 for her career • This is Hopkins' fourth win over a ranked opponent this season, including the second in the top-20.
