BALTIMORE, MD – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up a pair of road wins on Wednesday at Morgan State and Dickinson. The Blue Jays beat the Bears, 6-1, and shutout the Red Devils, 9-0, to improve to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins won all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match.
James and
Thomas Yu beat Makkijha Brown and Martial Kawunde, 6-4, at first doubles.
Daniel Ardila and
Jonathan Zhang defeated Niles Rachel and Rhajzon Rankins, 7-5, at second. And at third,
Marco Azar and
George Jiang won 7-6 (5) over Mikeal Carpenter and Bertin Karenzi.
The Blue Jays and Bears split a pair of three-setters at first and second singles, with the remaining four singles matches decided in straight sets. Carpenter earned Morgan State's only point of the match with a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (3) win over
Thomas Yu at first. Zhang rallied to beat Rankins 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6) at second.
Mason Liu beat Rachel 7-6 (0), 6-2 at third and Ardila won 6-2, 6-2 over Brown at third.
James Yu defeated Karenzi 6-3, 6-1 at fifth and Azar did not drop a game as he beat Kawunde at sixth.
Meanwhile in Carlisle, the Blue Jays shutout the host Red Devils.
Pranav Gadiraju and
Allen Gong didn't lose a game in their win over Garrick Adams and Will Lewis at first doubles.
Nick Charanjiva and
Zahari Stoimenov then beat Thomas Griffin and Levi Veleanu 8-2 at second.
Karan Belday and
Andrew Tran wrapped up doubles with an 8-5 win over Florian Anderson and DJ Finnell.
Gadiraju lost only game as he beat Veleanu 6-1, 6-0 at third singles to put JHU up 4-0. Tran then clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at second over Griffin. Charanjiva followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spencer Goodman at sixth. Stoimenov then defeated Lewis 6-1, 6-2 at fourth and Hopkins led 7-0. Belday beat Anderson 6-1, 6-4 at fifth and Gong closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Adams at first.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, April 15 with a pair of home matches. JHU hosts Muhlenberg (11 am) and Christopher Newport (2 pm) at the JHU Tennis Courts.
