Three Run Ninth Rallies #4 Johns Hopkins Past McDaniel, 10-9

Souvignier Wins it With Walk-Off Single

  • Score: #4 Johns Hopkins- 10, McDaniel- 9
  • Records: JHU (29-3), McDaniel (16-14)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Nick Jos (2-0), L: Conor Henderson (0-1)
  • The Short Story: In a game where the lead was not safe throughout, the fourth-ranked Blue Jays put together a three run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a victory from the Green Terror and move to 29-3 on the season.

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays entered the ninth inning losing 9-7, needing to string together some hits to avoid dropping one to McDaniel. They started off the inning perfectly with a Jimmy Stevens double to right field. Tripp Myers entered the game as a pinch-hitter and traded places with Stevens, smoking a first pitch double to right field to make it 9-8 and put the tying run in scoring position. Isaiah Winikur and Alex Shane followed up with a single and a walk respectively to load the bases with no one out. Johns Hopkins' RBI leader Matthew Cooper missed a walk-off grand slam by a couple feet, but he was able to bring in the tying run on a deep fly ball to left. The game came down to Dillon Souvignier, who had a walk-off walk last week, but this time it would take a base-hit to win it. Souvignier lofted a ball down the left field line that landed passed a diving outfielder. Winikur came darting around third base and slid in uncontested to seal a win for the Blue Jays.
  • McDaniel were ready to go early in the game, bringing in four runs in the first two innings, all of which came on homers from Ben Davis and Connor Uhrig. The Blue Jays pulled the game back even in the bottom of the third, getting RBI's from four different players in the first three innings.
  • After both teams pushed a run across in the fourth, JHU grabbed their first lead of the day on a sacrifice fly to right from Shawn Steuerer to plate Matthew Cooper.
  • The Green Terror took control back in the seventh, bringing four runs across to take a three run lead. However, their bullpen was unable to keep the Blue Jays at bay, ultimately falling 10-9 to fall to 16-14 on the season.

Inside the Box Score

  • For a second straight game the Blue Jays picked up exactly 17 hits as a team. In 11 conference games, JHU is averaging 14 hits per game and over 12 runs.
  • Souvignier's walk-off knock was his second walk-off RBI of the season and career. The Blue Jays have now taken the lead in the ninth inning or later four times this season.
  • Nice Jos was dominant out of the pen, pitching 2.1 shutout innings and striking out three to earn his second win. Jos has now pitched 9.1 innings this season without allowing a run.
