BALTIMORE, MD – The 10
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with wins at Mary Washington (6-3) and Ursinus (7-2). The Blue Jays improve to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins grabbed a 2-1 lead over Ursinus after doubles and then won five of the six singles matches to secure the win.
Daniel Ardila and
Pranav Gadiraju beat Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer, 8-6, at first. Rogers Darby and Ethan Yu beat
Zahari Stoimenov and
Nick Charanjiva, 8-3, at second.
Andrew Tran and
Karan Belday beat Andrei Bogdan and Noah Mandel, 8-1, at third and the Blue Jays led 2-1.
Ardila beat Jespersen 6-4, 6-2 at first singles while Gadiraju defeated Oberholtzer 6-3, 7-5 at second. Tran won 6-4, 6-1 over Yu at third and Stoimenov beat Rogers 6-4, 6-3 at fourth. Bogdan picked up a point for the Bears with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6) win over Belday at fifth. And at sixth, Charanjiva defeated Mandel 6-3, 6-0.
Meanwhile, down in Fredericksburg, Hopkins fell behind 2-1 after doubles but rallied to beat Mary Washington, 6-3. Rishi Charan Shankar and Andrew Watson took the first point with an 8-5 win over
James and
Thomas Yu.
George Jiang and
Mason Liu answered with an 8-6 win over Andrew Cooper and Artis Hart at third. Brock Ladehoff and Peter Leese closed out doubles with an 8-7 (7) win over
Marco Azar and
Allen Gong at second to put the Eagles up 2-1.
Thomas Yu won a three-setter at first singles over Shankar 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Liu took a 6-2, 6-4 victory at second over Watson. At third,
James Yu rallied to beat Ladehoff 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Hart earned the long singles' win for UMW when he beat Azar 6-2, 6-4 at fourth. Gong defeated Leese 6-1, 6-3 at fifth and Jiang won 6-4, 6-4 at sixth over Cooper.
Hopkins will host third-seeded Washington College in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on Thursday, April 27.
