Blue Jays Run it Up on Gettysburg For 10th Consecutive Win

Team Eclipsed 20 Runs For the Fourth Time This Season

  • Score: #1 Johns Hopkins- 22, Gettysburg- 5
  • Records: JHU (33-3, 14-1), Gettysburg (17-19, 4-11)
  • Pitching Decision:
  • The Short Story: A seven run surge in the third inning erased an early 1-0 deficit and propelled the Blue Jays to a 22-5 win, extending their win streak to 10 games.

How It Happened

  • After getting blanked in the first two innings, the Blue Jays came with a vengeance in the third inning to take control of the game. The first seven Johns Hopkins batters reached base safely during the rally and Dylan Whitney and Alex Shane kicked off the scoring with RBI singles. Matthew Cooper stepped up to the plate with two on and cranked his 19th home run of the season to make it 5-1. Charlie Monterrosa and Jimmy Stevens both finished up the scoring in the inning, hitting back-to-back sacrifice flies to complete the seven-run inning.
  • With two outs in the next inning, Shane roped a double down the left field line to get into scoring position. Gettysburg opted to intentionally walk Cooper, and Dillon Souvignier made them pay for that, doubling down the right field line to bring in both runs to give JHU a 9-1 lead.
  • The Bullets punched back into the game in the bottom of the fourth, pulling within four. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of Matt Nichols who tripled to left field to bring in two runs. Ryan Anderson came out of the pen for the Blue Jays and punched out two batters to hold the lead at 9-5.
  • In the fifth, a double by Lukas Geer and single by Tripp Myers put runners at the corners with two outs. Shane came through once again, lashing a triple into the outfield to bring in both runs. Cooper once again drew an intentional walk and Souvignier once again punished Gettysburg for it, tripling to right field to bring in two more runs for JHU to give them a nine run advantage.
  • Johns Hopkins manufactured a few more runs in the later innings to continue to extend the lead. Ryan Anderson and Nic Jos settled things out of the bullpen to give JHU an 22-5 win to remain three games ahead in the Centennial Conference.

Inside the Box Score

  • Alex Shane and Dillon Souvignier became the first pair of Blue Jays to hit a triple in the same inning. It was just the second time this season JHU has hit multiple triples in a game. Shane's five RBI's led the team and were and season and career-high for him.
  • With its 22 runs today, JHU has scored 10 or more runs in eight of their last nine games. The Blue Jays are averaging 13.3 runs in conference games this season.
  • For the first time in his career, Matthew Cooper has homered in three straight games, which is tied for the second most consecutive games with a homer in conference history. Him and Sam Frank have accomplished that feat this season.

Of Note

  • The Blue Jays 338 runs on the season currently leads all D3 teams.
  • This season is now only the second time in program history that the team has scored 20 or more runs in four games. The only other time was back in 2009.

Up Next

  • The Blue Jays are scheduled to finish up the regular season series against the Bullets on Friday at Babb Field on 3:30 pm.
