Johns Hopkins Swimming Welcomes 12 Newcomers for 2023-24 Season

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming coach Scott Armstrong announced that 12 newcomers will join the Blue Jays for the 2023-24 season. The newcomers include 11 freshmen and one graduate transfer and hail from 10 different states.
 
Hopkins swimmers combined won three individual national championships and combined for 57 All-America honors at the 2023 NCAA Championships. The Blue Jay finished in fourth place at the championships and junior Kellen Roddy won his second straight title in the 1650 Free. The JHU women placed 11th at NCAAs and sophomore Kristin Cornish won national championships in the 500 Free and 1650 Free.
 
Hopkins is set to open the 2023-24 season on Saturday, October 7 when William & Mary visits the Newton White Athletic Center.

Why Hopkins: I chose Hopkins because it provides a plethora of amazing academic and athletic opportunities.  I also loved the close, tight-knit atmosphere of the team and the beautiful campus when I visited.  I can't wait to spend the next four years as a Blue Jay!
Something about me: I built a raft with my friend from wood and plastic barrels that can float over a dozen people.

Why Hopkins: I was looking for a school with an excellent pre-med program, flexible academics, and a D3 swim program.
Something about me: I love working on cars and engines in general.

Why Hopkins: I chose Hopkins for the strong alumni network and research capabilities. Additionally, I enjoy learning to learn, and Hopkins has numerous campus communities that work in areas that I am interested in. 
Something about me: I worked in landscaping as my summer job. I spent three weeks in Spain with a friend of mine and I am currently developing code to run a website for blackjack.

Why Hopkins: The academic quality and prestige, the coaches, and the closeness of the swim team
Something about me: I can hold a handstand.

Why Hopkins: My mom did her residency close to Hopkins, so I was on campus all the time as a kid. 
Something about me: I really like to read, and my favorite book is Jane Eyre.

Why Hopkins: I chose Hopkins because of the incredible support systems both in the University and the swim team. I feel like I can be given the resources and tools to help me hone my passions and turn them into something that can last a lifetime. 
Something about me: I like to journal and collect stationery a lot, and I tend to be quite lucky with picking the best watermelons. My dream pet is a black Labrador, or a hamster named T-Bone.

Why Hopkins: I choose Hopkins because I loved the team atmosphere and the balance of athletics and academics they offer. I also love Baltimore and the overall feel of the school.

Why Hopkins: I chose Hopkins for two reasons. One, I believe the coaching staff and my future teammates will push me to achieve my goal (Olympic Trials.) Two, the connection and skills I will acquire from Carey School will prepare me better for my career after swim. 
Something about me: I am a first generation Japanese American, son of a family tea business owner that has been around since 1923. My mother, Ayako, is from Kamakura and my father, Den, is from Shizuoka. I have two younger sisters, Kiku, who goes to UCLA and Chiyo, who goes to Peninsula High School.

Why Hopkins: I fell in love with the tight-knit community and the emphasis on balance between academics and athletics. Whether it is in the pool or in the lecture halls, I know I want to be a part of a community where I am always learning, challenging myself, and exploring my own individuality. To me, Hopkins was the place where I would be able to challenge myself and form relationships that would last.
Something about me: Dumplings are my favorite food.
