Johns Hopkins Posts 2-0 Shutout at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, PA – The third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored a goal in the second and fourth quarter to beat host Gettysburg, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon. The victory is the 100th at Johns Hopkins for head coach Jane Wells, who recently earned her 250th career win.

The Blue Jays improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Bullets fall to 3-4 on the season, including 0-2 in the conference.

The Blue Jays got the game's first goal off a penalty corner just 46 seconds into the second quarter. Junior Ava Balacek inserted the corner to classmate Jenna Halpin at the top of the circle. Halpin settled the ball and then sent a low hit back into the circle, where freshman Sydney DelBello tipped it up and over Bullets' goalie Emilia Saccento.

Junior Emily Amsden added an insurance goal when she converted a penalty stroke with just 4:31 to play.

Senior Alexis Loder, sophomore Phoebe Williams and freshman Aubrey Kilgore shared time in the cage to post the shutout. Williams finished with two saves while Loder and Kilgore were not forced to make a save. Saccento tallied five saves in the loss. Hopkins outshot Gettysburg, 8-2, and had a 20-5 advantage in corners.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 27 as the Blue Jays host the Muhlenberg Mules. The Centennial Conference game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.

Notes: Wells is the second fastest coach in Johns Hopkins' history, in any sport, to reach 100 wins as she needed just 117 games to hit the milestone • She is now 100-17 (.855) at Hopkins and 252-87 (.743) in her career • Amsden's penalty stroke goal was the fifth of her career, tied for third most in program history.
