Amsden, Mehra Lead Johns Hopkins Over Muhlenberg

BALTIMORE, MD – The third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got two goals each from Emily Amsden and Gen Mehra en route to a 7-1 win over Muhlenberg Saturday night. The Blue Jays improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Mules fall to 4-5 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they capitalized on the game's first corner just 51 seconds in. Junior Ava Balacek collected a loose ball in the circle and sent it towards the left post, where Amsden tipped it in. Muhlenberg answered with 4:10 left in the quarter to knot the score at one. Abba Diglio fired a shot from close range that was blocked by the defense. Erin Jackson was able to poke the ball back to Diglio and she slipped it inside the near post for the score.

Hopkins responded with a pair of goals just 43.8 seconds from Mehra and junior Liz Falterer to push out to a 3-1 lead with 14:24 left in the second quarter.

Amsden tallied her second goal of the night off a quick counterattack. Senior Maura Minter collected a loose ball at the endline and found Amsden open at the top of the circle. She settled the ball and then ripped a shot past several defenders and the goalie with 4:30 to go in the third.

The Blue Jays added three goals in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Three and half minutes into the quarter, Mehra one-timed a centering pass from sophomore Zoey Bennett for her second of the game. At the 54:23-mark, senior Mikayla Schoff scored on a rocket of a shot off a Siena Urbanski corner insert to put Hopkins up 6-1. Sophomore Grace Waldeck wrapped up the scoring just over three minutes later, when tipped in a shot from classmate Megan Chang off a corner.

Hopkins outshot Muhlenberg, 19-4, and had a 12-3 advantage in corners. Sophomore Phoebe Williams, freshman Aubrey Kilgore and senior Alexis Loder split time in the cage with Williams earning the win. Grace Leard took the loss with three saves in just over 55 minutes of action. She also got a defensive save from Taylor Canfield.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 4 as the Blue Jays host Stevenson. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.

Notes: The seven goals are the most since a 9-0 win over Randolph-Macon on September 21, 2022 • This is Amsden's first career multi-goal game • For Mehra, this is her second career two-goal game.
